There's not enough time in my life for these studies!

Since 2011 is has mostly been fun and, in fact, sometimes more that that, and one day I hope to come back to study here...

Inspired?

Visible to anyone in the world

Yes, but perhaps not to Blog...clown

Still trying to 'get into' DD206 and now remember a similar feeling at the start of DD131 - my other social science module. thoughtful

So, while I work my way through this latest module, I will be: -

  • Eating, regularly, at Pizza Express restaurants in and around London;
  • Drinking (too much) espresso - usually on the same occasion as the pizza;
  • Listening to music - currently (right now in fact) recent Jazz by Dave Stapleton (from Cardiff);
  • Preparing my trumpet playing for the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany 'season';
  • Reading sociology based material;

Currently I'm reading a fairly large book (at over 400 pages) called "SOUNDS LIKE LONDON (100 years of Black Music in the Capital)" by Lloyd Bradley (2013). This is a fascinating insight into the development of black music and the surrounding culture and gives me a flavour of how many of the styles I enjoy 'came into being'.

Cheers for now,

After a while, it came to a stop...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Sunday, 14 Sep 2014, 10:20

...as many things do - but it was a good Statistical Summer, as my 19th May entry declared! big grin

M140 (stats) is now completed - last iCMA sent Yesterday - and, ‘unofficially’, this gets me the highest OCAS score so far - from six modules. I really enjoyed and ‘got into’ M140, although TA212 (music) remains my overall favourite, best and most useful module to date.

A few busy days coming up with Luton (Hi Fi Richard) today and Laurence (my son) over this way, from Cardiff, to pick up girlfriend from Heathrow on Tuesday morning. It also happens to be his mum’s (my Ex’s) birthday on Monday 15th, and I’m sure we’ll fit in a pizza and some espresso somewhere!

After this... well, let’s see how DD206 (social sciences) inspires me thoughtful

Not forgetting,

Pizza as Planned!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Tuesday, 19 Aug 2014, 10:35

Having posted my last TMA for M140 (stats) on Fri morning, and topped-up my Oyster card, I went into London on Saturday (16th) to drink fine espresso and meet up with  Richard in KJ West One (New Cavendish Street). I took the tube to Baker Street (my choice of stop for the mo...) walked through Marylebone to Workshop Coffee in Wigmore Street, and then onto their Fitzrovia Coffeebar in Mortimer Street (W1W 7FE).

Fortified with two excellent espressos (yet again the better of the two was in Mortimer St.) I wandered over to see Richard and chat to the chaps in the Hi Fi ‘emporium’ cool After a while, and with business to be done at KJ West One, I went back to Fitzrovia for my third espresso (!) and finally back to Richard at around 17:15.

Jason, as he did in June, joined us for the ‘Pizza Express Experience’ and we all walked south toward Berkeley Square and the Bruton Place PE. Mostly... we all enjoyed another well prepared and tasty early evening meal with the exception being that Richard was not as impressed with his ‘Pollo Forza’ as he has been recently. This is the very hot and spicy one that I tried back on the 3th May and on that occasion, Richard was properly hooked!

This time, as well as my 'Sloppy G' (that I had as a starter) I also had a Pollo Forza, but, unlike Richard, without the chilli sauce and the v.hot red peppers. I opted, instead, for slightly less hot green peppers and for me it was fine, not too hot, maybe a little bland in comparison to the 'real thing' - but certainly preferable to me!

The most obvious reason for a difference in taste (and a slightly worrying trend, perhaps?) is that this PE has a new pizza chef, and not the one that cooked for me last time (12th July) or for Richard and I back in May. Hopefully (if needed) this, and other ‘issues’ will be well handled - and sorted - by the new lady manager. Yep, unfortunately, a bit of a staff change to add some uncertainty to Bruton Place PE.thoughtful

Anyway, and although I still have the EMA and two iCMA’s for M140 to do, I have just had a few days of no stats! This will change soon as Wednesday evening I have the last online tutorial, after which “I must get on with things M140”... and so I will. wink

So, ‘till the 6th Sept, that’s all the pizza for me but there will be the perfectly acceptable espressos that I get from the Perivale (Hoover) Tesco store.

Cheers big grin

Any excuse...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Tuesday, 5 Aug 2014, 08:39

...to meet up with Richard and go to Pizza Express!

Mainly due to the car going back to the garage on Monday, 4th (for exhaust work to get it through the MOT which it failed a few weeks back) I couldn’t do my usual Monday shop in Perivale’s Tesco. Instead, it seemed like a good idea to arrange to see Richard for Sunday Lunch (at PE, of course!) and do my shopping in the Tesco near to where he lives, not far from Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

And so I did big grin

The Costa Coffee inside this Tesco also serves a good espressos,  and the two I had went along way to make up for the lack of Workshop Coffee that I usually enjoy when in West London.

In fact, not only were the espressos good (and better than most of the recent ones in the equivalent Costa in Perivale mixed) the pizza’s were also v.good.

Luton PE has not been so good lately, but this time was the best this year, and not far off some of the better ones in London. The traffic to-and-fro was clear and flowing well, so all-in-all, a good Sunday out with Richard. cool

Right then, until 16th August, I’m back to my M140 stats, with TMA 04 underway followed by a couple of iCMA’s and the EMA to prepare for.

Unexpectedly, the Espresso Guy went solo...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Friday, 18 Jul 2014, 10:43

...as Saturday 12th saw me eating my favourite pizza in the Bruton Place Pizza Express, just off Berkeley Square. This was without Richard or my son (Laurence) who, generally speaking, most recently anyway, are with me when I’m eating at PE.

Less unexpectedly (as in planned...) I posted TMA 03 for M140 (stats) on Sat morning and although I knew that Richard was having a well deserved Saturday off, I wanted to ‘relax’  - perhaps not the right word... surprise - and did so by going on the tube to London and eating pizza at Bruton Placecool Of course, I also really wanted to visit the new ‘Workshop Coffee’ in Mortimer Street (Fitzrovia) again... to see that it is still good, and indeed it iswink It is,so far, just that little bit preferable to the Wigmore Street coffeebar where, even so, I had one of each of their Colombian espressos.

Not only all that (!) but the Finca Tamana Espresso that I have been drinking at Workshop coffee these past two visits (28th June and 12th July) tastes even better than the previous Columbian  - from Finca Asturias - that I had been enjoying so muchapprove With the absence, for a while, of the longstanding espresso blend Cult of Done Espresso (now v.17) that is my ‘reference coffee’ in these matters, I have been drinking one of each of the Colombian varieties and, this time, in both these coffeebars wide eyes

This, slightly edited, from their web-site:

“Since 2012 we've been purchasing all we can of the top quality lots produced at Finca Tamana; Elias Roa's farm in El Pital, Colombia.  For the most part we've roasted the coffee from Finca Tamana for filter brewing, and have packed the coffee into lovely 350g bags, distributed to retail and wholesale customers a-like, shipping Elias's coffee all over the world. There will be (however) this fantastic coffee - roasted for espresso - in the main grinders of all our stores.

For the majority of the month of July (as long as our supplies last) we will be replacing our usual Cult of Done Espresso with Finca Tamana Espresso and using this wonderful Caturra selection for all of our espresso-based drinks.”

Lovely stuff!

After all the espresso and that v.good pizza on Saturday -  and going solo  - I met up with Richard at his home in Luton on Monday (14th). Normally, Monday morning is set aside for one of my weekly food/household shopping trips and I generally go to the Hoover Building (Perivale/Greenford, W. London). As we had planned lunch, I thought it best to get there early and shop in the Tesco ‘extra’ in Dunstable  - 5 minutes by car from where Richard lives. Yet more espresso was consumed; two in Costa (inside Tesco) and  the ‘PE blend’ alongside yet another ‘classic’ sloppy giuseppe pizza big grin. One of the not so good things about the Luton trips (apart from the lack of a Workshop Coffee!) is that, yet again, Bruton Place PE serves a better pizza. Having said that, without the comparison of other PE’s, Luton is just fine for this sort of thing... wink

After awhile though, it does gets a bit much for me with the more usual routine making for ‘loads of espresso and a pizza’ happening only every three or four weeks. Recently this has become every two weeks and twice this past week. Still, it is rather enjoyablethoughtful!

Music-wise I am still playing Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and now even play along to some of the ‘less complex’ numbers when ‘doing my trumpet’ approve

Looking forward to mid-August for the next visit to London, so 'til then, and with less espresso for while, keep cool...

MU123 Result...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Friday, 11 Jul 2014, 08:18

Yip yip, or even hip hip he he -

says he, having passed MU123 big grin

Not the best result ever, but OES of 69% and 80% OCAS will do nicely - I wonder if I can improve on that with M140? I'm just about finished with TMA03 and although this one is a bit more tricky than the previous two, I am managing to get answers to all the questions so far. At this rate I should at least be able to match the 80% mark I just got for MU123.

Oh yeah, I just found where all the 'other' icons went to - including the smiley's etc. wink  I didn't bother to look far for them and this was done by accident blush...

More about Fitzrovia

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Monday, 7 Jul 2014, 13:32

For those who may be interested in such things, and because I will now visit Fitzrovia fairly regularly for a while... according to Peter Berthoud (with this info gathered from fitzrovia.org.uk)

It is quite well known that Fitzrovia gained its name from the Fitzroy Tavern and the artistic and literary crowd that hung out there and neighbouring pubs in the 1930s. With the Tavern itself being named after Charles Fitzroy who began developing the area in the 1750s.

(but) I didn't realise until recently that the name "Fitzrovia" had fallen out of use during the 1950s and 1960s and was only revived in 1973. The Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association have the story on their website.

“In 1973 the organisers of the first street festival in Charlotte Street wanted to create a title for the Festival. The name Fitzrovia Festival was suggested by Eric Singer a German immigrant who recalled the use of the name in the 1940s. So the name Fitzrovia came back into common currency reinforced by the annual Fitzrovia Festival and people now had a name from which to try to define their neighbourhood.” (From about Fitzrovia, London.)

(A) poster (by Nancy Fouts of Shirt Sleeve Studio) was produced to promote the first annual Fitzrovia Festival and its beautiful design did much to publicise and popularise the use of the name. I was lucky enough to find an original poster during my research for my new tour: “Walk Every Street in Fitzrovia in a Day”.

Peter Berthoud does “Walk Every Street in Fitzrovia in a Day” Saturday 5 July 2014, 10am – 5.30pm.

As for me, I am planning to be there on Saturday coming up (12th July) and not only to enjoy the espresso on sale at the Workshop Coffee bar in Mortimer street, but also to look around with a somewhat different, and even a more appreciative, viewpoint than last time!

Moved to Fitzrovia ...?...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Wednesday, 2 Jul 2014, 08:31

...just east of Marylebone and at the eastern end of Wigmore street (and New Cavendish street).

Well then, Langham Place Pizza Express (PE) it was, on Sat 28th June, and a mighty fine pizza we all had too…  On this occasion Jason (also from KJ West One Hi Fi Shop) joined us for the customary eat/drink and discuss at one of the many PE’s that (hi fi) Richard and I frequent on Saturday evenings.

Seems like we’ve found another good one here, as not only were the pizza’s v.good, so was my espresso and being less than ten minutes walk from KJ, Langham Place PE may well take over from Thayer Street as the closest good one. Only time will tell as “the food preparation can vary” - unfortunately for Thayer Street (?) their pizza’s seem to have fallen behind in the ‘keeping up with other branches’ stakes and, although we’ve not been to the Baker Street PE recently, it was always much more busy than others at six o’clock when Richard and I eat.

Being in Fitzrovia is also good (for me, anyway) as… Workshop Coffee opened their newest coffeebar in Mortimer Street which I enjoyed whilst waiting for Richard and Jason. As this is literally around the corner from Langham Place (and the BBC offices), it would be a shame not to! So although this area is not as ‘up-market’ as Mayfair and the Berkeley Square surrounds, we do get Cavendish square to walk through and just as many interesting buildings to admire.

BUT... I don’t think that the Langham Place PE is as good as Bruton Place and even with having to walk twice as far, Bruton Place is still the favourite. Maybe we’ll try Luton again soon (not been there since March) and probably ‘BP PE’ in a couple of weeks time - with a bit of luck.

From Baker Street to Berkeley Square,

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Monday, 16 Jun 2014, 12:41

And as before, two pizzas there

Enjoying the Pizza Express

No fuss, no strain, no stress…

…which was Saturday (14th) with Workshop Coffee and KJ West One also being visited. Besides, the sun did eventually start to shine so, all-in-all, another good trip to the Marylebone area!

All of a sudden, three come along as we’ve planned to go the Langham place PE on the 28thJune. Which fits in nicely with study plans and  other, more regular, things like shopping and today this is Perivale (Hoover) and Slough on Thursday, via the dentist - ouch!

M140 is progressing well, MU123 is over bar the result of the EMA(!) and, with the next module (DD206) starting in October, my statistical summer should be easier than the maths spring that was a bit much for me to cope with... Still, I reckon I’ve passed MU123 and will be disappointed, not to say suitably annoyed, if this is not the case!

Music is still rather jazz oriented but I may well get back to the orchestral works soon.

Finally (with suitable drum roll) Laurence, my son, now has a 2:1 degree in Music from Cardiff Uni so all is looking good there. He now intends to continue to study for his Masters degree (in music) but is still unsure as to where it will all lead…  ah well, I know that feeling!

Laurence & Alex; new photo - same pizza…

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Wednesday, 4 Jun 2014, 18:53

… and without much persuasion, both son and gf  were happy to eat at Pizza Express (PE) for lunch on Saturday (31st May) having ‘coached it’ from Cardiff on Friday eve.

I caught up with them close to Workshop Coffee (Wigmore st.) where we all enjoyed some of the best coffee around and I’ve even converted Laurence to ‘taking the Espresso’!!

As well as the Cult of Done (v.16) espresso that I had a little earlier, we both then had the Colombian Espresso whilst Alex chose an Americano. This info is from their web-site:

“…Miguel Augusto Ortega, grows both Caturra and Castillo varieties on his modestly-sized farm of 5 1/2 hectares, and is able to keep the two lots separate at all stages of production. It is the yellow and red Caturra varieties lot that we have brought to the UK to release as this espresso. Impeccable in its management and presentation, Finca Asturias is testament to the hard work that Miguel puts in…”

SO, a good start to a Saturday lunch-time and after a wander around the Marylebone area, we headed on down to the Pizza Express in Bruton Place at around 14:00 - again, providing the very good PE experience! This is still the PE of choice, with most others having had some off-days recently.  After pizza (although I was the only one that actually had a pizza...) there was time for a quick pose for the camera (taken by Alex) whilst walking back to Bond Street tube. I left them at this point, with Alex looking for ‘something different’ from where ever ‘something different’ can be found - I suggested Camden Market, but that’s only because I vaguely know about it. Anyway, I have put the resultant (cropped) photo as my profile pic, for now…

Later that evening, they would be at Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa restaurant near St. Paul’s - where a table had been booked - not bad for 'poor' students!

Meanwhile, there are, of course, other PE places to go and I’m now tempted to try the Langham Place one later this month. Interestingly, I recently found out that Workshop Coffee are opening a new coffee bar in Mortimer Street which just happens to be close by the Langham Place PE - lucky! Although Langham Place has been a PE option for quite a few months now, a ‘Fine Colombian’ (or equivalent...) close by only adds to the attraction. If it wasn't for the Bruton Place PE being quite so good, I expect that this one would have been tried sooner!

Having posted off my MU123 EMA last week,  things are a little more relaxed for me than of late and although I have the next iCMA for M140 to tackle now, I have been enjoying the relaxing sounds of The African Marketplace (1985) by Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) for the past week. Not doing so much with the orchestral stuff at the mo and I even play mostly jazz items when I get my trumpet out - just keeping in trim, you understand?

All the best Espresso (Guy)

A statistical summer?

Visible to anyone in the world

In amongst all the time and effort so far spent on the EMA for MU123 (about half way through now) I managed another V.good result for my stats TMA02 (M140). Not quite as high as the equivalent ‘02’ for MU123 but still, and specially with MU123 finishing soon, things are looking good for a summer of studying and learning more about stats!

Music...? Well, not a lot really mixed, but I have the listened to the occasional symphonic piece by Fibich (1950 - 1900). Most recently though, I have chosen Jazz by Abdullah Ibrahim (b. 1934) and the older albums he recorded in the good ol’ 1980s (!) under the name of Dollar Brand - African Marketplace and Water from an Ancient Well.

As well as dispatching this MU123 EMA, I’m looking forward to the next pizza run at the end of May and, in the meantime, I always get a good shot of espresso from the Costa inside the Tesco store in the Old Hoover building at Greenford/Perivale. Talking of which, I’m shortly off to the said Tesco for the regular Monday morning food-shopping trip and, of course, the COFFEE‼wide eyes

Seven... and a Very hot pizza!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Saturday, 19 Jul 2014, 12:42

Well now… Yesterday I went on my usual jaunt around the Marylebone ‘village’ area and stopped off at the usual places…

This time, taking the tube to Baker Street station and not to Bond street  which (although I go to most often these days) is having ‘work’ done and also gets a lot more busy than Baker Street does. This also gives me the chance to walk a different route - along past Madame Tussauds, through the grounds of Marylebone church, all the way along Marylebone High street, into Marylebone Lane and on to Wigmore Street. Then to Workshop Coffee for my first espresso which was a ‘fine columbian’! cool Reminding me of the final lines of the Steely Dan song ‘Hey Nineteen’ -

“The cuervo gold

The fine colombian

Make  tonight a wonderful thing”

I doubt that they are referring to espresso coffee beans, but you never really know with Donald Fagen’s lyrics…wink

Swiftly followed by an espresso of the African/South American Cult of Done (v.16) blended variety and then on to K J West One to see (hi fi) Richard and admire more of the ‘fine hi fi’ that is available therein!

Eventually (after I'd consumed two more espressos wide eyes) and listened to some good ol’ rock… we made our way down to the Bruton Place Pizza Express eatery.

Another change to the routine here as I started the meal by having a ‘new’ Very spicey chicken and pepper version of their romana pizza and not my usual garlic bread - the first mistake of the day! surprise About half way through eating this I realised that it was really Tooo hot for me and it made the ’Sloppy Guiseppe’ that I had to follow (yes, two…) seem very tame by comparison. I don’t think I’ll do that again in a hurry, althogh Richard liked the portion that I couldn’t manage, and wants to ‘go again’ as it were!tongueout

Still, this rounded off a good afternoon with all emporiums visited being up to their usual high standards.approve

See you soon,

Not too much espresso...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Tuesday, 22 Apr 2014, 10:51

...with MU123's TMA 04 that arrived on Saturday providing a ‘lift’ to the daybig grin. I scored higher than I thought I would and about the average of the other three which sort of makes sense and would be nice to get in the EMA…

As well as that, the traffic being good whilst driving to and from Reading and ‘getting things done’, the weekend was a good one. Trumpet playing went well, considering that I hadn’t played in church (or anywhere for that matter!) since January and I even had a good Monday shop in Tesco (Hoover Building).

Jazz by Abdullah Ibrahim - nee Dollar Brand (born Adolph J Brand) - ?

Having recently got his Sotho Blue album that I heard during (hi fi) Richard's ‘demo’ of the new Martin Logan CLX speakers last week, I play this from time to time although it is mostly a little too laid back for me… mixed It is, though, a very well recorded album and therefore ideally suited to 'showing-off' hi fi systems!wink

I have also continued to listen to Schumann’s Op.52 (which is not laid back..) when not in the mood for jazz or Steely Dan (etc.)

Back to the trumpet it is then smile

Today I'm off (with Mum and Dad) to Tilehurst, near Reading, to see my brother and tomorrow I'm playing some hymns for the Easter Sunday service at All Saints church.

I have been listening to various versions of Sway (a.k.a. Quien Sera, by Pablo Beltran Ruiz) perhaps most popularly remembered as sung by Dean Martin in the 1950s. I got the 'bug' for this from one of my trumpet play-along books where the band plays the backing and the 'student'(!) gets to play the tune.cool

It keeps playing along in my head now...

The Espresso Guy? Well, when I asked the ladies in the Luton Pizza Express (some I hadn't seen since last year) if they remembered me, the answer was "...yes, you're the espresso guy!". Indeed I am, as it is mostly all that I drink when I'm out - only really matched by the amount of bottled water I get through...wide eyes

Another Good pizza

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Thursday, 17 Apr 2014, 07:45

…on Saturday (12th) with loads of espresso and good listening time in KJ West One. All helped, no doubt, by finishing and posting my latest maths TMA on Sat morning!

Richard (and crew) had just set-up some new MartinLogan CLX speakers and although they are being ‘run-in’ (as it were) they sounded v.good to me! approve On the MartinLogan website these are described as “The World's Finest Full-Range Electrostatic Line Source Loudspeaker”. For around (only?) £25,000 not too bad at all - if indeed they are the finest of course! wink

Anyway, 'twas another good Saturday in and around Marylebone, and the pizza (etc) in Bruton Place was up to the usual standard - with plenty of banter with the now familiar staff!

Music listening recently has been ‘glimpses’ of J.Suk and Z.Fibich but mainly Schumann’s ‘Overture, Scherzo and Finale Op.52’ along with a hint of Steely Dan. The album GOLD by Steely Dan was played on Richard’s demo system that uses the new CLX speakers and although a compilation, some of the tracks really came across well, showing how good these speakers are.cool

That's neat, Pete;

Pizza to eat;

Drinking Espresso;

Not wanting to wait,

This may change (along with the picture?) as Easter approaches when I have promised to play for the service at All Saints church.smile

So, this is how I looked mid-morning on Fri 21st March 2014, at least as far as the camera 'saw' me (slightly cropped and compressed for this purpose though)... blushthoughtful

Having got a ‘Very middling’ result for MU123’s TMA 03 (grade D in effect) I get an A for M140’s (stats) TMA01 - by which I mean above 85%! I doubt that I would have scored so highly with the stats if I had spent the ‘required’ time working on the maths answers and it just goes to show what the over-lap of these modules can do to my coping ability!blush Not only do I have good scores for the maths TMA 01 and 02, I even have full marks for the iCMA’s either side of the lowly TMA 03 result.thoughtful

As I work through iCMA 41 for M140 I’m hopeful for another good result, given that I am (now) able to concentrate on it… wide eyes

Well, the hard part is done and I’m awaiting the result of TMA 01 for stats (M140), hoping for a better mark that the Very middling one I got for the maths TMA (03 of MU123)blushsad. As a result of all this assignment work, I haven’t been concentrating on any music, apart from the ‘odd snippet’ of a Steely Dan track here and there. Even then,  I haven’t really  been listening. I did put on some Schumann on Saturday morning, but it soon got ‘ignored’ as I thought about the chores that I have been collecting…thoughtful

So, anyway, I went to Luton on Sunday 16th to see (hi fi) Richard at home and eat pizza for lunch. The only real down-side of pizza in Luton is that I don’t get a ‘damn fine coffee’ as I do in Marylebone (Workshop Coffee)cool. Nor do I get to enthuse about hi-fi with the (other) experts in the shop! The pizza (and the coffee) were good, better than the slightly bland one we had there in January, even perhaps, a little too spicytongueout!

MU123’s iCMA 44 duly went on Sunday eve, and I’m now working on iCMA 41 for M140. Well, at least I was, until I decided to write this (with a little ‘Dan’ in the background) approve

Right then… where was I??

- catching up...

Visible to anyone in the world

…or at least, trying to!

I left off with the hope of enjoying a pizza with Richard but in the end, I need not have been so concerned. The pizza that we had on Saturday night (15th Feb) was as good as ever - tasty and well presented cooltongueout(yummy!). Not that the one I had with Laurence in Thayer Street (8th Feb) was bad, but, for me, not quite up-to what chef dishes up in Bruton Place these past few months.approve

Wednesday 19th became Aston Abbots day (as it were) a day in the week that seems to suit both Christine and Mum and Dad. Another regular slot in the month I guess - going into the countryside like this (or away from London at least…) is good! Yesterday, 22nd Feb, we drove over to Tilehurst, near Reading, to see my brother - away from London but not quite ‘to the country…’

So now, I must get back to the maths and stats modules that require assignments doing. This time, with the TMA’s and iCMA’s being close together (four in March and one due by 15th April) it is taking me awhile to get to grips with things  - thoughtful - so much so that I have had to leave the trumpet to one side lately and concentrate.sad

I do, however, still find time to listen to my current choices of music by Fibich and Schumann.big grin

Marylebone = too much coffee!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Sunday, 9 Feb 2014, 12:54

Yesterday, I was in my usual (and currently fav) places in and around Marylebone though not for quite the usual reason, as Laurence (my son) was over/up from Cardiff for the weekend. The Jazz Society he belongs to had arranged a trip to the Dean Street Pizza Express (PE) Jazz Club to hear Soweto Kinch (saxophonist) on the Saturday night. We met around 1 pm outside the now relocated HMV - by Bond Street tube - and walked on over to Workshop Coffee in Wigmore Street. I can safely say that I drank too much coffee between then and 4 o’clock, when we finally went our separate ways…"wide eyes

A good lunch was had in the PE in Thayer street - a previous fav tongueout - which, slightly worryingly, was similar in presentation to the last Sunday lunch that Richard and I had in the PE in Luton on the 12th Jan. I hope it’s not a change to ‘that type’ of flavouring which while still being good, the pizza’s we were getting in Bruton Place last year were definitely preferrable. Yep, I do always have the same pizza - a ‘classic’ Sloppy Giuseppe - and can therefore judge these things well! wink I also took Laurence to KJ West One to ‘check-out’ some of the hi-fi on display and also for us both to say hello to Richard. Next Saturday (15th Feb) is now planned in for my usual trip to the Marylebone area and I hope we get to Bruton Place to see how the pizza’s there are being served.thoughtful

Meantime, I’m now enveloped in maths and stats modules with not much ‘spare’ time as there are assignments for both due in a few weeks. I am, though, managing to listen to Schumann symphonies - currently alternating between no’s 1 and 2. This has been ‘inspired’ by the BBC Radio 3 Building a Library edition (Jan 4th) which discussed the first of Schumann’s symphonies. I downloaded this (from the podcast system) and listened to it a couple of weeks ago and although I have a copy, I am now tempted to purchase the recommended performance. This is by David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich and is currently available at a ‘budget’ price of less than £10 for the four of Schumann’s symphonies! big grin Prior to this I had been enjoying the first and second symphonies of Z. Fibich, as noted last time.

I have also been listing, regularly,  to the following radio progs. Inside Science, Science in Action, Discovery (from the World Servce) and, of course, wink the More or Less ‘stats show’! Occasionally I choose the In Our Time and Thinking Allowed offerings… So, all in all, not much time left for Dvořák, but his music is definitely not forgotten.approve

...looking forward to more coffee and pizza, with Richard, next Saturday!cool

I'll be back...

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Pete Collier, Monday, 13 Jan 2014, 13:58

…to Dvořák no doubt, meantime, all else has resumed...

Friends have been visited: I drove Mum and Dad to see Mum’s friend Christine in Aston Abbots on Wednesday 8th and myself to Luton to see (hi fi) Richard on Sunday 12th - on his ‘home turf’ instead of at work! We had a good lunch at the Pizza Express (PE) in Town - opposite St. Mary’s Church - and, as always, it was good and tasty, even if a somewhat different overall flavour from the PE’s we’ve visited in London over the past six months… thoughtful Rees (Richard’s son) also came for the pizza - he is now studying Journalism at the local campus of the University of Bedfordshire.approve

Trumpet playing continues, as ever, but not many Church services will be played at - probably until Easter -  although I've recently played for the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany services...

I’m back into the MU123 module (after a bit of a break) but a little nervous about M140 that starts soon. It will be somewhat hard for me to keep my previous pace with the maths whilst also getting up-to speed with Statistics - even if these are ‘only’ level one (introductory) modules. My next social science module (DD206) will have to be done ‘stand-alone’ so as to get the most from it blush

Music listening has taken a slight detour this month but still remains firmly in the Dvořák territory. With symphonic pieces by  Leoš Janáček (1854 - 1928), Joseph Suk (1874 - 1935) and most recently the first two symphonies of Zdeněk Fibich (1850 - 1900) as my listening material. All good stuff, and with the availability of the many recordings in the Naxos Music Library to choose from - cool - I have purchased some good recordings of Janáček’s Idyll (1878), Suk’s Fantastic Scherzo (1903) and all three of the Fibich Symphonies.

Oh yeah (Yello anyone ?)... I’ve just been to my favourite Tesco store in Perivale for food shopping!big grin As this is done twice a week, It’s not particularly ‘blog-worthy’ I suppose, but some may say that about other things hereabouts.wink Mostly though, these blogs are about the 'breaks' from the regular daily/weekly routines of ‘being with’ Mum and Dad, doing housework and, of course, the aforementioned shopping...

Visible to anyone in the world

… where did next year go ??

Still, as it is Thursday, I must go food shopping (yummy!) tongueout In a few hours I’ll be off to my fav Tesco, the one in the ‘Art Deco’ Hoover Building in Perivale, W.London.cool

Normal service (if you can call it that) will be resumed shortly, with the continuation of all things blog-worthy - and no New Year resolutions to worry about.wink
