Credit Transfer from A Levels

Hi there,

I'm a student from Singapore and I have taken my GCE A Levels Examinations, which includes a study of Mathematics (Higher 2). My educational institution is listed as part of the "Previous Study Finder".

I'm keen on taking the BSc (Hon) Mathematics Q31, but was wondering if my A level certification would be considered in a credit transfer application? I'm asking this because the application form seems to indicate that an A level certificate is considered to Further Education, and not Higher Education.

Hi Craigton,

It is great that you are considering studying with the Open University.

If you have already studied at university level, you may be able to count it towards your Open University qualification – which could save you time and money by reducing the number of modules you need to study. At the OU we call this credit transfer.

A-levels are not considered to be Higher Education. They are at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework, whilst study at the Open University begins at level 4.

If I do sign up for the degree course, should I wait for the credit transfer team to get back to me on the credits I'm eligible for, or should I just go ahead with the registration and choose the modules first?

Also, is there an OU exam centre in Singapore? I can't seem to find any information about this online. How will I be sitting for exams if I'm a student from Singapore?

Thanks for your messages.

If you apply for credit transfer you need to wait until the application has been assessed by the credit transfer team before registering on any qualification or module. This is because you won’t know which modules you may be exempt from until the credit transfer assessment is done. If you have contacted the credit transfer centre it will be best to wait for them to come back to you. If you have no study at Level 4 or above as mentioned previously then you can go ahead and register for the degree.
