History degree

Hello
I am retiring in May and would like to study for a History degree.
I was last in full time education some 37 years ago when, after completing a degree in Law (LLB Hons), I took my post-graduate qualification to become a solicitor.
Do I fulfil the entry requirements for a history degree, and if not what do I need to do? Is the BA in History the right level for me to study at? Do I get any credits for the qualifications I have?
Thanks for your help

Hello Matthew
Thanks for getting in touch and it’s great to hear that you want to return to study.
Our BA (Honours) History (Q01) is open entry so you would be welcome to study it. We do offer an optional Arts and Languages Access module (Y031) as an extra preparatory module if you would like a gentler start to returning to study after a long break away from it. Academically it is at a much lower level than you have studied previously but it could be a good introduction to distance learning as well as an introduction to studying the Arts and Humanities generally if you think you may benefit from this. You can see if this may a good option for you here:
http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/history/degrees/ba-history-q01#entry-requirements
As an alternative to the Arts and Languages Access module you could study some of the free courses available on our OpenLearn website as optional preparation. They are non-credit bearing, you work through them at your own pace and you can study as many as you like. You can find them here:
https://www.open.edu/openlearn/
We offer a range of History based degrees in addition to the BA (Honours) History (Q01) and you can see them all here:
http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/history
We do also offer an MA in History which requires a 2.1 honours degree for entry. You can read about this MA and the entry requirements here:
http://www.open.ac.uk/postgraduate/qualifications/f28
We have a system of Credit Transfer where students can bring previously completed credits to an Open University qualification to reduce the time needed to complete however any previously completed study must have been done within the last 16 years so I’m afraid your study is outside this timeframe.
I hope this information has been helpful. If you would like advice about which course to study you are very welcome to contact Student Recruitment where our advisers will be pleased to help. The telephone number is 0300 303 5303 and lines are open Monday to Friday 8am – 5.30pm. Registration for the History based degrees and the MA will open mid-late March and, if you wanted to study the Arts and Languages Access module, the next start date for this is May 2021 and registration for this closes on the 8th April.
