Re Picking Modules (Course K22)

Re K22 PG Cert in Computing

Does the 1st module you pick have to be from the Top 4 in the list there?
Or it can be any of them?

Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Postgraduate Certificate in Computing (K22). To gain this qualification you would be required to study at least 30 credits from the first list you are referring to on the online prospectus page. This means that you would begin your studies with a module from the four listed first. I hope this helps.

If you would like to discuss your study interest with us further, please contact us using one of the methods on the ‘Contact Us’ section of The Open University website, or by visiting: http://www.open.ac.uk/contact/

Registration for modules starting October 2023 is now open and will close at the beginning of September.

Thanks for your reply.

It's devastating really, cos it means waiting till November 2023 now to do either :

M816 Data Management or M811 Info Security.

Which - in turn - means waiting till May 2024 (14 months away) to do

          M812 Digital Forensics.

Hi Jennifer,

My apologies that what you were asking was misunderstood. I can confirm that the qualification may be started with the study of the module, Digital forensics (M812). The entry requirements for the module are specified on the website page, which I am linking you to below:

M812 | Digital forensics | https://www.open.ac.uk/postgraduate/modules/m812

Enrolment for the May 2023 start closes on Thursday 6th April.

Please contact us to discuss your study intentions in detail.

Thanks for your reply.

Why did you say that..

Why did you say that, please? If it isn't the case?
Thankyou.
I am here for help and it's very confusing. You are not putting any of your names to these messages either. It doesn't bode well for an organisation that wants my money.

Hi Jennifer,

We are pleased you're here for help. However, this forum is for general guidance and you are advised to contact us directly to discuss your study intentions, as we may be able to support you better if we can look at your options with you in more detail.

I can assure you that our interest is to support you to make the right study commitment for your aims and I apologise that the first reply to your query suggests that you are required to study modules in a specific order.

Thanks for yor reply.
I did email you already -- on 23 March at 08:30AM to ask this question.
Reply on 24 March at 11.07 AM, from Sam in Student Recruitment and Support Team..

.. also told me that for the Course K22..

> You would need to take this step by studying one module from the list below:

•       M816 Data management – next starting Nov 1 2023
•       M811 Information security – next starting Nov 1 2023
•       M815 Project management – next starting May 1 2023
•       M813 Software development – next starting May 1 2023

And to..
> Please be aware that to study M815 or M813 in May, you would need to register by April 6 2023.

I replied 24 March at 11:20AM to check again and asked:

> Am i obliged to a first module from these first four at the top then?
> Could I pick M817 Systems Security for instance? There in the second half of modules listed.
> I actually just registered for M817 - but should not have done, maybe.

Date is now 28 March and I am still waiting for a reply to that.
None of this bodes well at all, does it.

Hello Jennifer

I can confirm that the 60 credits needed for the K22 can be studied in any order. I’m sorry we didn’t confirm this for you initially.

We are aiming to reply to emails within 2 working days so you should receive a reply to your email from the 24th March today.

I’m sorry we can’t take your details here to be able to check your record as this is a public forum so your details wouldn’t be private. You can contact the Student Recruitment team via the following page:

https://www.open.ac.uk/contact#postgraduate-enquiries

Most of our courses don’t fill up. When a reservation is made on a module the place is held for 6 weeks or until the final enrolment date whichever is soonest. If registration isn’t completed the reservation expires. You can contact Student Recruitment to cancel the reservation or let it expire but if you decide you would like to go ahead the advisers in Student Recruitment will be able to access your student record and advise your next steps.

I hope this helps.

Yes, i came here to try and get clear (and quicker) answers, because you have deadlines on applying for these courses so the facts and delays really matter.

> Most of our courses don’t fill up

The M812 | Digital forensics was noted as FULL with a waiting list last week, on Friday 24th. This meant that no-one could apply for it. It suddenly became available again here , on Mon 26 March, when i cited it here.

> If registration isn’t completed the reservation expires.

So, a course can keep saying FULL when spaces could be free - if you let people just cancel online.

> When a reservation is made on a module the place is held for 6 weeks or until the final enrolment date whichever is soonest. If registration isn’t completed the reservation expires.

I notice that your emails, confirming the applications (I made 4 applications on 24 March, only 2 of which confirmed so far - today is 28 March) don't even state this, which is super unhelpful.

And on two occasions (in this forum and on email) you have led me to believe that I must take a module from the top 4 in the list that i've copied above - but that isn't the case.

I don't think i'll be studying with the OU. First impressions are really bad. Some terrible Trustpilot reviews that you have aswell.

Hi Jennifer,

I do apologise for any miscommunication in all the previous posts. The quickest way to get information is by calling our advisors on 0300 303 5303, Monday to Friday, 8:00-17:30.

In general, modules don't fill up, but we should have checked specifically with regards to the Digital forensics (M812) module. The presentation starting this May is operating on a waiting list, so if students that are reserved, but do not complete registration by the final enrolment date, then the waiting list spots would become reservations, in a first-come-first-served order, allowing registration. The May presentation of Systems security (M817) is also working to a waiting list at the moment.

With regards to choosing modules, it should have been made clearer that if you choose a module from the bottom group of modules, you would only be able to choose one module from the top list of modules. You would need to choose at least one module from the top list in order to complete the 60 credit Postgraduate Certificate in Computing:

https://www.open.ac.uk/postgraduate/qualifications/k22#course-details

Currently, the following modules starting in May have space available without operating on a waiting list system:

Project management (M815) - 6 April final enrolment date

Software development (M813) - 6 April final enrolment date

Continuing professional development in practice (U810) - 13 April final enrolment date

Making strategy with systems thinking in practice (TB871) - 6 April final enrolment date

Strategic capabilities for technological innovation (T849) - 6 April final enrolment date

Technology innovation management (TB801) - 6 April final enrolment date

There is no obligation to study with the Open University, but if you do want to study please take a look at any entry requirements for the modules and register by the relevant final enrolment date.

Our full contact details can be found here - https://help.open.ac.uk/contact/

Best wishes,

Ramsay

Thankyou for putting your name to that message , Ramsay.
And for clarifying this..

> With regards to choosing modules, it should have been made clearer that if you choose a module from the bottom group of modules, you would only be able to choose one module from the top list of modules.

Will you please spell out and confirm if the order matters?

Can e.g M12 come before M816?

I know they come before each other in the calendar - but that isn't my question.
I am seeking your clarification that starting with M12 and then doing M816 will give me the Postgrad Certificate in Computing -- and not just two module certificates, which do not give me the Postgrad Certificate.

Thankyou.

Hi Jennifer,

In relation to M812 and M816 it does not matter which order you study the modules, as neither of them have any pre-requisites.

Although M812 requires no formal qualifications for entry, you will be expected to demonstrate appropriate skills at the postgraduate level. These skills might have been developed from previous study or from professional or commercial experience.

In particular, you will need report writing skills. You will need to draw on some background knowledge of networking, hardware and software. In particular, you would benefit from some experience of using more than one operating system, including Linux. It would help if you already know how to run programs with a command line interface and use a virtual machine through software such as Oracle, VirtualBox, or VMware.

You may want to check out this free course on our OpenLearn website -

https://www.open.edu/openlearn/education-development/succeeding-postgraduate-study/content-section-overview

It introduces you to the nature of postgraduate level study and offers essential preparation for pursuing your learning at this level.

Upon successful completion of M812 and M816 you would be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Computing.

If you want to study M812 starting this May, please note that you would need to be on the waiting list before the final enrolment date of 6 April. As it is getting closer to that date, I would recommend calling our advisors on 0300 303 5303 Monday to Friday 8:00-17:30.

If you are not able to get a space on the May 2023 presentation of M812, you would be able to register on the May 2024 presentation of the module after 1 October 2023.

The M816 module is available to study in November 2023, and it would finish in April 2024. You should be able to register on the M816 module after 1 April 2023.

To re-cap, if you were to study M816 in November 2023 and M812 in May 2024, and successfully complete the modules, you would gain the Postgraduate Certificate in Computing at the end of 2024.
