BSc Env. Science - on campus

Hello,

I am going to apply for BSc (Honours) Environmental Science (Q52), starting in September 2023. I am German, but I will live in Ethiopia for the next 3-4 years and will only be in Germany for 1 or 2 weeks a year. My understanding is that most of the studies can be done online but some exams will be face to face in exam centers. How many face to face exams will be in all 3 stages? And where are exam centers? Are there any in (or close to) Ethiopia?

Also, how often are resident school visits are planned in all 3 stages?

Thank you, Doreen

Hi Doreen,

It is great that you are considering studying with the Open University. You are correct that study with the Open University is by distance learning, so you can study from anywhere. You may be interested in checking out this page that has more information on distance learning and how you will be assessed:

https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/what-is-distance-learning/assessment

Not all modules will have exams. For example in Stage 1, U116 does not have an exam, but S112 does. In  Stages 2 and 3 there are some optional modules, so you would need to look at the module descriptions to see how many exams you may need to take for the BSc (Honours) Environmental Science.

With regards to the residential schools, there aren't any in Stage 1, but some of the modules in Stage 2 and Stage 3 may have residential schools, and you should look through each module description to see how many residential schools there are for each module.

In general, there is normally an online alternative to a residential school if living outside of the UK.

Currently, all exams taking place before 31 December 2024 will take place remotely. In the past, when we held in person exams, the established exam centres were in the UK and across continental Europe. There was also the possibility to arrange the exam at a non-established exam centre wherever you are in the world. In the context of Ethiopia, the exam centre would likely have been in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Please note that the deadline to register is 7 September for study that starts in October 2023.

Generally, each 60-credit module will require 16-20 hours per week of study. It is important to consider how you will fit study in with your other commitments such as work, family, social, etc. Our Time Planner can help:
