Hello, thanks for your message.

To qualify for leave to enter and remain in the UK as a student, students need to be following a recognised full-time degree course, that requires face to face weekly attendance at tutorials and lectures, with an organisation which is on The Home Office UK Border Agency Tier 4 Register of Sponsors. Although the University is on this list, we do not meet the criteria for this visa for non-research degree students for the following reasons.

  • The OU is classed as a part-time Distance Learning institution
  • Attendance at tutorials is optional and students are not required to attend university on a weekly face to face basis
  • Meet "English language" skills criteria for this visa that a University has to confirm and check
    • English language competence for reading, writing, speaking and listening has to be assessed by the University and relevant documentary evidence provided by the student.
    • The University does not ask any student to provide evidence that they meet this requirement.  All students self-assess their own levels of English Language skills instead using guidance provided on our website.
In light of this, the University cannot act as sponsor to any student wanting to come to the UK on a Tier 4 General student visa (other than for full-time research degree study) as we are not able to meet the “monitoring of daily/weekly attendance” requirement laid down by the Home Office and we do not check that students meet the English Language requirement.

Many of our qualifications and modules are available for study to student's resident in most countries around the world.  Therefore, there is no need for students to be resident in the UK to study with us.
