2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV. So we do not lose heart ❤️. Though our outer self is wasting away , our inner self is being renewed day by day.

We all have our daily struggles whether it be our own health or the health of our family.  A problem to solve at work or home. God can give us the courage and wisdom. 🙏 Peace.

Harvest time!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Saturday, 27 Nov 2021, 16:37

🚜 🌾

We had a great walk this afternoon across the fields. The weather was sunny and there was a nice cool breeze. It is coming slowly to the end of the summer, but still some sunny days left.
🌅
First we walked through the park, then out onto the country lane,  that leads to the fields.
The farmers and workers had been busy for the past few days,  harvesting the wheat  fields, it is a bit earlier this year,. When we passed the barns,  we saw two  large stacks of hay, piled up high into neat squares of hay,  one on top of another. 🟧

🐓🐔🐣
Next we walked a bit further on, we heard a cockrel and saw some hens, they were running around freely in the  green meadow.  They looked very happy and they could go into their little wooden house, if they got too hot or tired outside!

There was a lot of activity at this time of year and very  busy farm workers gathering in the wheat. Lots of new workers we had not seen before. Tractors and harvesters driving past us.

🏡The lady who lived nearby in the stone cottage,  was bringing them some fresh water and food for the chickens. She smiled to us as we passed by and she said "Hello, lovely day" the man near to the tractor, who was her husband I guessed,  joked  "Is it hot enough for you?" He asked.
" It's Just right!" I replied enthusiastically with a big smile and a thumbs up!

🏞  Continuing on our walk ,  we got onto the  narrow footpath that led through the field. The wheat had recently been cut,  so we had a clear view ahead. To the right in the middle of the field, was the reservoir bordered by a row of saplings. On the other side was a very dense wood. Up ahead was a small hill.

🦢
We stopped briefly to watch the white swans gliding gracefully across the water of the reservoir, there were  also some ducks and moor hens at the far side. We even saw a big fish pop it's head up out of the water just nearby and then it dived down again with a big splosh!🦈

🛤
The next bit of the walk was a bit bumpy and quite hard going,  not helped by the fact that there were so many hoof prints from the horses and ponies, they always take their morning canter there every day with their riders. Our feet kept sliding into the hoof marks! We had to watch out for the horse droppings too!  It was a bit tricky but we managed it by holding on to each others hands. We laughed like children as we stumbled about trying to walk straight across the uneven field!

⛲The last lap of our journey leads us up the hill on a nice wide track, that crossed over a stream with bubbling water coming out of a pipe cascading  into the stream.

This gradual steep climb,  terminates at the top of a hill,  which has an incredible  panaramic view, of the route upon which  we have just travelled.

🐑🐑
Below us was a large green meadow with a flock of sheep grazing in a field,  and two slow moving tractors moving up and down the next field,  gathering up the hay, then a harvesting machine in the neighbouring wheat field,  the reservoir which was sparkling in the sunlight lay ahead at the far side.  The harvested wheat field, that we had crossed,  lay just below that and beyond it was a large wood.

🌲🌲🌲
Now we sit down with a big sigh of relief on a green grassy area, just in front of a gate, looking through it we could still see the view..

We took our sandwiches out of the back pack, and a cool drink to go with it. It was good to rest in the sunshine, before we make  our way,  all the way back down the hill and onto the lane that leads us home.    ⛰

When I am here,  outside in the fresh air and walking, all my troubles seem to disappear!  💭

Visiting Old English churches

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 24 Jan 2022, 10:45

I like visiting these lovely old English churches. Even though we have quite a large historic church less about 3 minutes away from my house , I prefer to walk 30 minutes away (also good for keeping fit!)and  to visit the little chapel in the next village. This is because it's doors are always open and it has a friendly atmosphere.

What gives it a special charm?  it is set well back off the main road of the village and is set in peaceful surroundings, overlooking a vista of a large field with rolling hills. Behind the church is a foopath and a woodland area, leading to a small stream with a little footbridge over. Then there are various footpaths to follow across the fields.

The church itself has a lovely green area around it with benches and the cemetery lies to the rear. There are some gargoyles and pinnacles decorating the church. It is a grade 2 listed building and appears in the doomsday book as being built in 1086,  that was the original building,  but since then has been rebuilt with the original greenstone and it has 4 ancient bells housed in the bell tower.

The church door is always open and you can go in anytime to pray. It is small and only as big as a ground floor of a house. It is nice and peaceful inside with a nice atmosphere. You can feel that many people have prayed in here over the years!

I like to visit there as part of a walk, either before or after the walk,  depending which way I am coming from.

There is not a lot of iconography  inside the chapel,  just a simple crucifix in wood which has Jesus on, with his open arms to the world.
Behind the altar on one side, on a panel ( reredos) in beautiful Calligraphy, is the Lords prayer on the other side are the 10 commandments from the Bible.

There is a beautiful organ and a wooden pulpit. There are candles and a place to kneel to pray. Then there are the pews on each side of the aisle with kneelers.

As you enter there is a porch, then after the entrance area there is a font for baptising infants. Next further along,  is a reading area with books and chairs then there's the kitchen area, divided off by a heavy curtain.

What I like the most,  is that the door is always open all day every day until 5pm,  and the peacefulness of the place, being off the main road, but it also has a cosiness about it too. The fact that there are fresh flowers in vases dotted about, and it looks clean and smells polished, like it is well looked after. It makes an attractive church to visit.

I usually stay inside here for about 10 minutes to pray, I then go out to sit on the bench outside,  to admire the lovely view of the fields beyond for about 5-10 minutes.

Summer Garden - poem🌺🌾🦋⚘

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 29 Apr 2022, 11:57

This summer it was so very hot
I was out in the garden quite a lot
Battling with weeds and creeping moss
Keeping away stinging nettles and wasps!

Red roses grew around the door
The cherry tree blossomed like never before
The cottage garden burst with colours galore
The Bramble berries they grew more and more!

The trees too had a life of their own
With  little apples and pears they had grown
Elderberries hung like a jewelled crown
And  birds did partake
Of the berries blown down

The garden lawn was green as could be
We built a swing to hang from the tree
A 'hideaway' behind the house
And within this wood lived a little mouse!          🐁

The weather is cooler now.  I went for  a walk in the park this morning then did some shopping.

I am catching up on some reading. I often have 2 books on the go I am also reading a  'Maigret' detective story also in french.

I hope everyone is having a good break.

My Staycation

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 13 Sep 2021, 18:46

I have enjoyed my staycation so far.
We have had lots of hot weather, so I have been out in the garden pottering about.

Enjoyed being in the paddling pool, which I placed alongside the shed under the canopy of the overhanging trees, right in the corner hidden from view. It was good to plunge my hot feet into the cold water!

I have tidied the garden up a little bit and seen lots of birds, butterflies and the occasional squirrel, while sitting in my 'hideaway' reading my book.  It is lovely and peaceful under the trees and I have felt  connected to nature.

We had a nice picnic al fresco, in the garden on the picnic table. I also had a very good bike ride earliier with my friend around the quiet country lanes.

I have visited a local wood for quiet contemplation, had some long walks in the countrysde and we went to visit our friends on the allotments this week.  We helped them out and bagged some vegetables at the same time!

Next week we are all (family) going to visit a local nature reserve in our area.  Looking forward to going there!

We may even stop at our local beach on the way back.

A Hideaway

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Sunday, 21 Jan 2024, 17:57

Over the weekend I spent an hour or so in the garden, and  in my little garden wooded area,  behind my house, clearing away more weeds. The grass is growing long and I am leaving it to grow,  to encourage lots of insects and butterflies.

I went "inside" my little mini- wood,  this definitely needs tidying up. If I am to still use it for sitting in, then I need to lop off some of the branches or they will poke me in the eye!

Then the trees in the little wood that need trimming, are some Elders, an Apple tree, a Pear tree, a Holly tree, and another I can't yet identify yet, then going the other way, there's a row of evergreens. A plum tree in front, on the small lawn and various butterfly bushes, and a golden privet to the side. These form the outer walls of the canopy.

The floor of my little garden wood has branches and stones, these need clearing out of the way. There are bits of wood scattered around and broken pots, slabs and rocks that are the remainder of what was once a pond, which has dried up with the heat.
Pity,  I had such high hopes for it!

For the hedgehogs, I have placed an old small box no longer in use, onto its side and filled it with straw, this is good for when the hedgehogs visit.
A few times a squirrel has visited the garden woodland area recently, so I have put some nuts out for it, on the branch and on top of fence, which is his usual entry path.

The bramble berries to the side of the wood are now ripening, some red, some black and will soon be ready to pick. The whole bush,  was alive with the activity of butterflies, bees, insects, and now they are gone, it's the birds that are flying down to eat the berries.

The bird boxes are still on the trees high up above me, where we recently placed them. I don't know if there are any birds in the bird boxes yet, maybe next year. On the other side of my mini wood is my old, rather rustic, cobbled together wooden bench, looking a wee bit rickety, but still ok.

In here I can escape under the trees and sit and listen to the birds, read my book and study in peace. I can see to read if it is sunny enough! There is a shaft of sunlight shining through the trees illuminating the wood at the side of the garden and partition fence, that leads out to the front garden beyond.

I can see everything going on from inside of the wood,  Yet I am completely out of view from others!
It's just like my own little hideaway!

The Greatest Love !

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself." All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Climate on collision course

Infinite growth on a finite planet? That's a car crash!
Problem is, capitalism can't ditch infinite growth.
Why not?
A capitalist business needs to make a profit in a competitive market. This means investing in the latest tech and machinery if it doesn't keep up to date with business rivals, it will go bust.
So it needs to take that profit and turn it into more capital to reinvest in future production, future 'needs' and future markets.
More and more capital, more and more tech, more and more stuff. On and on.
Infinite growth is not just about bosses being greedy, it's the 'iron logic'  that capitalism is built on.
Grow or go under.
But as we are discovering, the price for this growth is environmental destruction.
Capitalism can't ditch infinite growth,  but we can ditch capitalism.
Think about it. The buying and selling system is old and obsolete. We don't need it. We have the global tech and know how to create a Co-operative  post- scarcity global system where there is no buying or selling because everything is free.
Don't destroy the planet, upgrade it and solve most social problems at a stroke.

Language is communication !

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 27 Sep 2023, 09:35

I used to see myself as a European at one time, especially when we had become part of the European Community, and for most of the years in which I had been growing up in (1970s)

I have had some wonderful  holidays in France in the past, and became interested in learning the French language,  travelling in Europe and learning about other cultures.

Later when Brexit came along and we left Europe, I felt more cut off, also with the Austerity, now I have found it more difficult to afford to travel abroad.

I am so happy that I am learning to speak French because it was something I had always wanted to learn, as it was on my bucket list of things to do!  I still have some links over there with my french friends with who I am still in contact.

However, in the process of studying language, I have become very interested in language generally , and in my own language in particular, especially in creative writing.

As a child I had a good imagination and used to write stories at school, which the teacher would then read out to the class.
Of course as time went on and my life changed so did my priorities. My mother was ill and so I became her carer. Later on I became a Health care worker.

Now I am a carer(my day job!) and studying. I feel a yearning to write, perhaps write short stories or blogs? Maybe become a writer?
I know that I still have a lot to learn perhaps in terms of grammar/ punctuation or in structuring sentences.
But It is never too late to learn!

An Allotment Day

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday, 9 Nov 2021, 21:54

Our friends J and K have some allotments near the nearby villages. They are completely into allotments, in a big way!  and because she is now retired and free from  commitments, she has the time to do that.

She is always down on the allotment every day,  but she has no dependent children (but she has some grandchildren) so she can do it part time and sell some vegetables.

We, my husband and me,  we  used to have an allotment some years ago, and it all went very well for a while but unless you are completely dedicated to looking after it,  it just doesn't work.

It started off ok, but our family commitments got in the way at the time ( hospital and Drs appointments for our son) and this meant we couldn't keep up with the allotment work at that time. We had too many other commitments!

However, today we went to visit our more capable green fingered friends, to give them some encouragement and to re-live a bit of our own nostalgia for allotment days too!

Her husband was off work today and so they had asked us to drop by and say 'hello' while we were going past their allotment for our walk.

They were now teaching their grandson to drive the mini tractor, as they have quite a large plot of land. The grandson was driving the tractor and we were all gathering up the potatoes and putting them into bags.

He (mr) was carrying large bags of potatoes on his back, ones that had already been gathered earlier, he was putting them into the van to take home.

The vegetables are all organically grown, and they always fresh and taste very good. She then asked us if we would like to gather up some tomatoes from the greenhouse, and she said I could have some tomatoes (free )for my salad! We were doing this for a little while and we managed to gather up quite a lot, also for us !

The rest of the tomatoes were not completely ripe yet, so she said to leave them, for another time.

Next, we collected the french green beans. first we placed them in a basket , ready to bag up later, into smaller bags. Kale was put into another bigger basket, all ready to put into the van. They also gave us a ( free) bag of Kale too! They are very kind!

After a while K  called us over to the table next to the shed, that they have built there. The shed is large enough for sitting in when the weather turns cold or if it rains, but today we were eating outdoors, in the fresh air, as the weather was nice warm with a little breeze.

K poured us all a glass of red wine, which we ate with some crusty bread , a pie, and some cheeses with pickle sauce, cooked potatoes and of course with their own, very good, allotment tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, lettuce  and a little beetroot!

Very tasty!

We had thoroughly enjoyed our day with friends down on the allotment.

Holiday walking- To 3 Villages!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 26 Jul 2023, 07:32

🏘      🏘      🏘
My friend and I decided to do the three villages walk. However,  I think you have to do it one village at a time, not sure about that? but anyway we did it all in one go which was quite ambitious !

When I arrived back home afterwards,  It felt like my legs were about to drop off! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

My friend and I Started off in the morning to the first village (about 2 miles away) This village was where there was that quaint little old church,  that we  had just visited recently. ⛪

There was a footbridge 🛤 and a lake but unfortunately there is no public right of way beside this lake,  and it was behind a fence! 🏞

We just had to follow the track. Pity we couldn't see it up close, it looked like it was really pretty,  and it had a boat on it, near to an island in the middle. perhaps it must be on private property? 🛶 pity they can't share it with us isn't it?

We had lunch (a small picnic) just past the village green 🟩 and on top of the hill, ⛰where we could  view the lake from a distance. After our picnic we walked back  down the hill and took the track leading to village no 2. (Another 2 miles.)🛤

Continued on walking to another lake, 🏞usually this one is for fishing in and here we sat down with much relief on a bench used by the fishermen.  There were no fishermen there at the time,  but we did see plenty of moor hens and ducks! We also saw a heron bird! 🦩It was nice to just sit and rest there. I was just waiting for my heart beat to slow down again!  It was quite sunny, balmy and warm by this time. 🌝 we just rested there and admired the amazing views.

The water on the lake was rippling in the cool breeze, and sparkling in the bright sunlight. We even thought we saw a fish 🦈 plop up to the surface, and swim off again, there were waterlilies and dragon flies. Wildflowers were growing everywhere. It was quite beautiful! 🌾🌼🌻 we took some photographs and we sat there chatting for a while.

However, I wish there could have been more benches for sitting along the way! 🌳🛋🌲
There was one large tyre, lying out flat in the field which we could both sit upon, on the way up the hill. This was great to sit on and it was all bouncy, which was a lot of fun to sit on and bounce about upon, the trick was to bounce up and down without actually falling off!!

After that it was all walking, walking up hill all the way. The footpath seemed endless and I was beginning to feel very tired,  my legs were starting to turn to jelly! How much further is there to go?
🌄
On to village no 3, 🟩 much more flatter here (about 1 1/2miles plus walk back of 1 1/2 miles) Fields of sheep, 🐑 cows 🐄and some very beautiful horses.🦄 Long country lanes, but only one bench at the end of the village!  All those wheat fields to walk through! That was really hard going!
After when  I had sat down on the bench,  I could hardly get up again! my legs, my muscles and back really hurt.

My friend who is younger, taller, slimmer and fitter than I,  had to push me really hard to get me up!

"Come on, up you get!" she said
"I can't go on!" I wailed.
"Yes you can, no pain no gain! " She told me
" I reckon we must have walked about 7 miles today!" I said seriously.

"Yes, 7 miles imagine that, you have walked 7️⃣miles, and at your age!" 👩‍🦳she laughed "Ok you, you cheeky young woman !.." I joked with her playfully, and we laughed a lot about it!
😄😁
A little further on we came to a little village pub and a much needed drink and a sandwich!🥃🥪
"I think this is what saved the day!" I said gratefully " That was quite a punishing walk,  I think tomorrow I will just rest all day!"

"Well actually, Said my friend with a mischievous grin. I was just looking on the map and there is yet another great walk, not far from here!"

" I hope you are joking?" I said looking rather alarmed at the idea.

"Yes, of course!" She said laughing and I gave a sigh of relief.

Needless to say I slept very well indeed that night!

A Wild Gardening day

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 24 Sep 2021, 00:12

This morning we take our coffee in the back garden, on the table beneath the trees. We then consider how to tackle this gardening. What a task!

Now where do we start in this overgrown garden jungle?
We have decided to leave the bramble berries where they are for now,  but Perhaps trim them back a little. They have attracted a lot of bees buterflies and other insects this summer. The bramble  berries are growing, but still green at the moment.

There is an elderberry tree at the side of the house somewhere, that usually has plenty of lovely dark elderberries on it by September. Just a little trim up for that one.

An Apple tree grows behind the shed, that has had some apples on it in the past, but we don't know what condition it's in until we find it again!

The plum tree in the middle of the garden we cut back,  but we haven't seen any plums for a few years but it seems to be growing still. It used to have lovely white blossoms on it which were very pretty. This tree also is used as a feeding station for the birds, so we will just leave that one. Maybe put some bird boxes placed high up on one of the other nearby tall trees, at the side of the garden.

The evergreens provide excellent shade,  but they need to be cut back, a bit,  as they are just like triffids, and are threatening to come right through the back window!

Going to have a false pond as the other one has dried up altogether! It has nice plants and shrubs growing there, but we just need to add some more ferns and rocks and a tidy up. Maybe we can do something with it!

The shed has almost disappeared under the jungle!  so we must try to find it again and create a pathway leading up to it,  so we can gain access to it again!

Perhaps place another hanging basket or two on the shed?
We will have to cut back all the branches, shrubs, nettles, grasses and weeds with a trimmer and strimmer machine  in order to find the shed! Although a machete would more likely do the job much better!

Hey-ho lets get on with it!
Happy Gardening. Anybody got any wild gardening ideas?

Return to the little wood!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 27 Sep 2023, 09:41

A bit of a cool day today, with only a little sunshine. It felt quite cold and there was something of a sea mist lingering in the air.

After doing my morning chores, shopping, cleaning. etc. I walked  down to the park, then along the country lane at a slow pace! I walked passed the cemetery,  on the way down towards the little wood.

I then stopped at the little wood (aunty's wood we call it!) to sit down for a while, on one of the benches in the centre of the wood. No one was about  walking about in the wood today,  probably because the weather is much cooler, so everyone stayed near their home instead. It was very peaceful in the wood.

Everything was pristine and tidy in the little wood, all the litter was  gone,  different from the last time, when it looked like a bomb had hit it!  when I had to pick all the rubbish up.  In fact, it looked like someone else, had actually been back in there to tidy up again!

Branches that had once been strewn about,  had now been placed into a nice neat pile. Someone had even made some little houses  for the hedgehogs and placed a new bird box on one of the trees!

Children had placed some pine cones on top of a shelf, all in a perfect row! There were also some pretty decorated pebbles and lovely wild flowers in a vase!

Birds were sweetly singing, there were only the crows cawing,  and the wood pidgeons,  who were just softly cooing, in the wood. Peace and order had once again been restored!

I think someone else who comes here,  must like this little wood as much as I do!

Trying to be environmentally friendly ! 🚮

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 27 Sep 2023, 09:49

Today was my day off from studying so I have been to visit a little wood we call it Aunty's wood  (so called after my aunt, who saved it from destruction!) The builders were supposed to build there but she organised a petition.

The children are now on holiday, and are coming here regularly into the  little wood. They sit down on the bench, and sit there with their friends having a chat, which is great of course!

However, what I found the other day was a piles of plastic bottles, beer cans and crisp packets scattered about! It was terrible and in such a mess
Maybe older teenagers?

A bin was placed pricisely for this purpose at the entrance to the wood also signs saying 'Do not drop litter!'.
I think they are just too lazy to go back to the entrance (only about 20 steps away) to put their rubbish into that rubbish bin!

We thought maybe placing a bin inside the wood, but they tried that at the park, and the kids just emptied all the contents out of the bin, onto the grass near picnic benches, so there was even more rubbish strewn about in the park. The council finally removed this bin and now there are bins only at the entrance and exit.

It is sad really because it is a pretty, peaceful little wood and up until now it was nice and tidy. It is only since the schools broke up, that I have started to notice all this rubbish appearing.

We have arranged a litter picking day tomorrow.  We will go to Aunties wood first wearing gloves and pick up all the plastic bottles, beer cans and crisp packets. After that we will also go litter picking at the park as well.
I just hope the kids will get the message this time! 🚮
