Old lang syne in frenchđŸ‡šđŸ‡”

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday 26 July 2021 at 19:02

French version

Faut-il nous quitter sans espoir,

Sans espoir de retour,

Faut-il nous quitter sans espoir

De nous revoir un jour.

Do we have to leave without hope,

Without hope of returning,

Do we have to leave without hope

Of seeing each other some day

(Refrain)

(Chorus)

It’s only a goodbye, my brothers

It’s only a goodbye

Yes, we will see each other again, my brothers

It’s only a goodbye

Formons de nos mains qui s’enlacent

Au déclin de ce jour,

Formons de nos mains qui s’enlacent

Une chaüne d’amour.

Let’s make with our hands held together

At the end of this day,

Let’s make with our hands held together

A chain of love.

Unis par cette douce chaĂźne

Tous, en ce mĂȘme lieu,

Unis par cette douce chaĂźne

Ne faisons point d’adieu.

Connected by this gentle chain

Everyone, in this same place,

Connected by this gentle chain

Do not bid farewell.

Car Dieu qui nous voit tous ensemble

Et qui va nous bénir,

Because God who sees us all together

And who will bless us,

Car Dieu qui nous voit tous ensemble

Saura nous réunir.

Because God who sees us all together

Knows that we will meet again.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet

And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

And pou'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd monie a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun til dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

And gie's a hand o' thine,
And we'll tak a right gude willie waught
For auld lang syne!

The Mission of the Open University

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Sunday 29 January 2023 at 11:16

The idea for the creation of the Open University,  came from the then  Socialist Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who was elected to power in Britain in 1964.

Harold Wilson came from humble beginnings, born in Yorkshire to a chemist father, and Schoolteacher mother.

He excelled at school and went on to study at Oxford,  gaining a first class BA degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

When Wilson came to power in 1964 he introduced a range of reforms, aimed at helping the poorest, who had no access to formal education.

One of these reforms was the expansion of the Education system and the creation of the Open university.

He believed this would improve the country's economy, have an educated work force and create greater opportunities for social mobility.

The way Education was made available to its registered students, was by utilising the television and radio,  to broadcast it's courses, also through the distribution of course books.

This led the way to link the Open University to the new technological developments, that were soon about to follow in this country.

In April 1969,  the Open  University was granted a Royal Charter, enabling it to continue its good work, in Educating it's more disadvantaged citizens, and all those seeking to gain access to
Higher Education.

Wilson was influenced by the politicians of his day, such as Clement Atlee, Ernest Bevan and Gaitskell.

Further more he took important steps to stop discrimination against women,  and ethnic minorities, under the then socialist government.

Wilson also joined forces with the United States Senator(Democrat) William Benton, the publisher of Encyclopedia Britannica,  who sponsored Wilsons vision for educating the people of Britain.

Nowadays the Open University opens it's doors to everyone with an Education,  with little Education,  or with no Education at all. It is open to everyone!

It is also available to overseas students,  and all those seeking higher qualifications,  including Diplomas, Degrees, Open Degrees, MAs  and PHDs. The Open University provides an excellent quality of Education,  and  is well recognised nationally,  as well as worldwide.

Home worker 🏠

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Sunday 18 May 2025 at 23:30

I really like working from home, as  I enjoy studying with the Open University. My dream would be to have a job working from home! This could be either teaching or translating.

WFH  this gives me the opportunity to be flexible, and to find the right balance, between work life and family life.

I can see my family and I can do all my daily duties , like feeding the cats,  do my caring duties,  looking after my son, doing the housework, shopping and so on.

I find the early morning is the best time to study because I have a lot more energy in the morning,  so I keep aside the morning for studying with the OU,  this includes learning the French language for  the module L332. Language generally and doing translation among other tasks.

I have to stop at some point to prepare the family meal, between my various tasks, but I really enjoy studying and taking in knowledge, this  makes my life varied and interesting!

In the afternoon,  I try to make  time for a walk. I usually try to walk the circuit of my village where I live,  to get some well needed exercise.

The evening is spent mainly with my family,  but I sometimes  can't stop myself from doing a little bit of studying!  or reading (study related) books especially if the TV doesn't interest me !

I like to  unwind with the music on the radio, classic FM usually , last thing at night and  just to relax a bit before sleeping, with a cup of cocoa.

Hope everyone is progressing well and having a bit of a break before the new term starts.

On Poverty đŸ„Ł

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday 9 November 2021 at 22:19

                    Â đŸŽ©

Welcome back to a  Vic -Tory -an Britain.  Ah! does it not warm your heart!

The poor will go off for their allocated shop at the local food bank to pick up their supplies and soon there will be even more people going to the food banks đŸ„Ł due to the high unemployment that is coming !  Wonder when they will be bringing back the workhouses? 🏱 the old asylums, orphanages and alms houses!

Whatever happened to "make poverty history"

Poverty and destitution all around us but that is what the nation voted for ( but not me)  Well that is what they wanted. Let's hope for great expectations 💰rather than Bleak House.

May God help us all!

Minuit ChrĂ©tiens! 🕛

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday 26 July 2021 at 19:13

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
'Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Chorus
Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming;
With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand:
So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land,
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend;
He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! your King! before him bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is Love and His gospel is Peace;
Chains shall he break, for the slave he is our brother, and in his name all oppression shall cease,Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we .          Let all within us praise his Holy name.

Christ is the Lord, then ever! ever praise we!

His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!

His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!

Chorus
Peuple a genoux, attends ta délivrance!
Noel! Noel! Voici le Rédempteur!
Noel! Noel! Voici le Rédempteur!

Le Rédempteur
A brise toute entrave:

Chorus
Peuple debout, chante ta délivrance!
Noel! Noel! Chantons le Rédempteur!
Noel! Noel! Chantons le Rédempteur!

La Françe đŸ‡šđŸ‡” pendant la seconde guerre mondiale

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday 9 November 2021 at 22:17

TMA 01 result time ✅

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday 3 November 2021 at 21:04

Very pleased to get my results for TMA 01 Very happy with that !
I had to ask for an extension because of family health problems. because could not concentrate at all with everything going on at home.

So I am extremely happy with the result and did better than I thought I would considering all the cicumstances.
Now I feel like I am on a roll and the next TMA is looming, although the speaking part is not my strongest point and I am quite shy really anyway.

My French writing is better, but unfortunately my speaking is still quite weak,  I think I lack confidence , so I need to strengthen my speaking skills by practicing and recording my voice, speaking in french.

I have made a start and wrote 2 pages of notes. Thats the easy part done now to speak out loud and pronounce all the words clearly and correctly.

I must not make any mistakes and not speak too fast or I may trip up, just try to stay cool and to remember that practise makes perfect.
I have to get familiar with reading my notes out loud and to convey the right meaning through the French language.

So let the battle commence !đŸ€ș

Visiting 🎄

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Saturday 18 February 2023 at 00:24

The times we are living through are very difficult to bear, but we are finding new ways to cope with,  and adapt in this strange new world. It can be confusing, frustrating.and sad.

However, according to the news on TV there is hope on the horizon, with a new vaccine so this is a positive, especially for those of us who are vulnerable.
Just had our very first ever christmas card this year, from our friends along the road.

With all the news that is trending at the moment I almost forgot that Christmas is just around the corner. It will be very different for many of us this year. Myself included in being appart from our distanced relatives.
The prime minister has said we have to be jolly careful this christmas!

However,  I myself have not seen many of my dear old lady friends. I don't know how they are, so I plan to just take a walk past their bungalows and see if I can see them,  and just give them a little wave, from the end of the garden. I will post a Christmas card through their letter boxes for them. Just to let them know they are not alone and that someone is thinking about them.

Christmas is often a period when the elderly feel the most lonely at this time of year.

Enjoying the BA in languages

Enjoying the Arts đŸ“–đŸ–ŒđŸ“š

I have always had an interest in Arts and I particlarly liked doing the Arts and languages access course with the open university at the begining of my degree journey.

This has reawakened my interest in poetry which was something I remembered I had really enjoyed doing at school. Once a week a dear old lady, a retired teacher she used to come into our class and recite poetry to the class it was such a change from the usual formal lessons we normally had.

I was so wrapped up in what she was saying and she spoke so clearly, eloquently and with great feeling. I used to find myself looking forward to those afternoon poetry readings. The stress just used to leave me as I listened to her voice it was almost musical and it transported me to another world of make believe and adventures!

I think that It was the teachers themselves who inspired us with their enthusiasm for the subject and their great patience towards us and their willingness to share their knowledge.

The teachers I have met at the OU are like that too, they are always enthusiastic and very willing to pass on their knowledge with great patience to others.

A Poem by Paul Verlaine

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday 28 June 2021 at 11:20

Chanson

Ecouter la chanson bien douce
Qui ne pleure que pour vous plaire.
Elle est discréte, elle est légÚre;

Pourtant, comme elle, encore fiĂšre;

Winter poem

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday 28 June 2021 at 11:27

Janvier
BĂąton en main, barbe de glace,
Cheminant avec sa besace,
Suivi d'un loupe-Cervier;
Il va, parcourant les campagnes,
Boire tous nos ruisseaux.
De neige il couvre nos montagnes
Et fait peur aux oiseaux.

Apporte un fagot, Marguerite,
Casse du bois, fais un bon feu !
Oh ! mon Dieu!

Helas! quand des glaces polaires
Descend le vieux Janvier,
Ses yeux mornes ont des colĂšres
Qui font peur au bouvier.
On ne voit plus de feuilles mortes;

Et les églantiers fleuris;
Douce trĂȘve
Qu'un long rĂȘve
Qui s'achĂšve
Les encore Ă  mes esprits.

Je verrai la croix qui penche
Au front des rochers alpins,
Et les tapis de pervenche,
Et les halliers d'aubépins,
Et la mousse
Qui repousse
Molle et douce
A l'abri de noirs sapins.

Je reverrai la bruyĂšre
Qui s'incline en gémissant,
Je reverrai la clairiĂšre
OĂč le ruisseau va
glissant,
Et ton onde
Vagabonde
Qui féconde
Le pecage verdissant.

Inspired by my trip to a mountain village in France.

Psaume 1

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday 9 November 2021 at 22:11

Tout ce qu'il fait lui réussit. Il n' en est pas ainsi des méchants; Ils sont comme la paille que le vent dissipe. C'est pourquoi les méchants ne résistent pas au jour du jugement, ni les pécheurs dans l'assemblée des justes;

Children are the future

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday 30 June 2021 at 14:25

Thank God that there are some good people who are concerned about what the government are not doing about child poverty in this country!

It is commendable that celebrities and sports personalities are more concerned about the future health of our children but what is the government doing about it? It's time they did something for its children.

Children are the future health of this nation. Lets make sure they are well nourished, educated and protected. It is these young people who will inherit what we leave to them. We hope it is good health and excellent education we leave them as well as a system that cares for its citizen or they will not thank us for it !

TMA 1 nearly ready

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Saturday 31 August 2024 at 01:47

Reread TMA 01 looks ok a bit plain but straight to the point. A good start might change it a bit yet and add a bit but I have to be careful for the word count.

Did some reading from essential French Grammar. Did a couple of exercises from the end of chapter. Just trying to absorb all the information from first couple of chapters.

Was not going to study much today as I felt tired after yesterdays trip to visit my son in the city, but I found it quite peaceful in the house and so was easy to concentrate. Tomorrow may be busy as have to go out for last shopping trip to the nearest town as there are some products I will need before the next lockdown.

Glad I studied a bit, next big study day will now be Tuesday.

It was there the scene proceeds
Children playing beneath the trees raced in their pedal cars
And grazed their knees

Smiling wth delight
As Autumn leaves fall
Playing hide and seek
Or throwing a ball

"I am bigger in my big car!"
"I am faster on my bike!"
"First one to the gate
Wins a big choclate cake!"

The echoes through the years
Of childhood days gone by
Brings a tear to my eye
O how the time does fly!

A garden swing is hanging
Which was once played upon
Now it all stands abandoned and forlorn

The chidren grown and gone!
