Looking ahead to TMA01

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Thursday, 21 Oct 2021, 02:07

Getting ready to think about the TMA assignment,  now that I have understood much more about creativity, stylistics and literary devices.
Lists made up and memorized,  of the terminology,  connected with linguistic techniques and in analysing poetry styles.
Feeling a bit anxious,  but excited about the process of writing the TMA out, which seems to be in three parts, the two main parts, then another sub part of part 2.
Glad I had a long walk at the weekend, as I will be at home quite a lot now studying. I also went yesterday with my son for a good long walk,  around the perimeter of the village, along the footpaths, so he's ok. The weather is not too good now anyway,  it has been raining for a couple of days.  At the moment son is occupied with the cats and making them a little beds, in various places around the house!
I am bringing my notes all together now,  and focussing my mind on the task ahead. There is still plenty of time, but I have to get on with it,  because I do not want to leave it until the last minute.

Hi Gillian,

If I remember correctly your module is E302. I completed E303 English Grammar in Context just a few years ago. I imagine there are similarities between the two modules. It was a very challenging module - Transitivity Analysis, Hallidayan Systemic Functional Grammar and many more delightful challenges to be overcome and, with the benefit of hindsight, actually enjoyed.!!

I empathise with you in that there was so much new terminology relating to so many new concepts to be learned. Using the BNC (British National Corpus) was really enjoyable as it demanded the correct formulation of what, at times, seemed like mathematical formulae, in order to find patterns in language use.

What I would say to you is that I benefitted so much in my ability to analyse language and that as your module progresses you will find that your skills are similarly developing. It's such an enriching experience.

Another thing that stays in my memory regarding that module is the engagement of fellow students. There were some fantastic people on the module forum ready to help and encourage. I can still recall many of their names and the topics we discussed. Hopefully it will be so for you too.

Best of luck with TMA 01 and with the rest of the module.

Bonne continuation,

Avec amitié,

Joseph.

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for your comments. Yes, it is very technical, as well as being about creativity.  Hopefully I will grasp it all before long!

Best wishes
