Online learning system complaints procedure

These procedures apply to staff and students on Open University learning systems and servers.

Possible causes for complaint include personal abuse, offensive language, harassment, commercial use and radicalisation.

For more information, refer to the OU’s computing code of conduct:

https://help.open.ac.uk/ documents/ policies/ computing

and the Computing codes of conduct document on this site.

Issues concerning discussion forums

If at any time you feel that the code of conduct has been breached you should first contact the moderator of the discussion area concerned and ask them to address the problem.

All moderators should be familiar with the procedure for dealing with complaints.

Issues relating to published material

If you have seen material that breaches the code of conduct on any OU’s hosted system (for example, a user’s own web area, learning diary or ‘blog’), follow the complaints procedure outlined below.

Issues concerning other areas of the system

You should initially make contact with the forum moderator or appropriate person in the OU system, as you would for complaints on other issues:

  • students should complain to their module team chair
  • associate lecturers should complain to their staff tutor
  • other staff should complain to their line manager.

If you do not receive a satisfactory response to this matter you may wish to make a formal complaint following the procedure below.

Issues relating to radicalisation

If the use of the University’s computing equipment, systems or information causes concern that a person may be at risk of being drawn into terrorism, the University may take action in accordance with the OU Prevent strategy.
