Access Modules

Access modules provide the perfect introduction to distance learning and studying with The Open University. They're designed to refresh your learning skills and build your self-confidence. You'll also get a broad overview of the subject that interests you.

An Access module is a great place to start if you want a gentle introduction to Open University study. Designed specifically for OU students, it can also help you to find out more about your interests and where you want your learning to take you.

There are three Access modules to choose from, and they start each February and October. They’re always 30 weeks long, and most students study for about nine hours a week. We recommend that you apply early to guarantee your place.

We offer three Access modules, which start in February and October each year.

When you’ve chosen the right Access module for you, simply visit the module page to book your place.

As you register, you’ll get a choice of payment options. You may even be eligible to study your Access module for free.

Study for free

In order to qualify to study an Access module for free you must meet the eligibility criteria that is listed on our website.  To ensure you receive the correct criteria, please select your country of residence when prompted to do so.  Further information about studying an Access module for free can be found at our Access module website.

If after reading the information on Access modules you still have some questions, then please post on this thread.  You must already have an Open University login or be signed up to the forum to post.  You can sign in on the sign in page or you can register to post on the forum on the forum sign up page.

Hi Tracy,

It is great that you are interested in studying with the Open University. Unfortunately the deadline has passed to register for study starting this October.

The next start date is February 2021, and the deadline to register is 14 January. In order to register for an OU Access module, you can register online:

http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/access

Alternatively, you can call our advisors on 0300 303 5303, , Monday to Friday, 8:00-17:30.

Our full contact details can be found here - https://help.open.ac.uk/contact/

In the meantime there are a number of resources available to start informal study at any time. You may want to check out our OpenLearn website which has adapted extracts of OU modules:

https://www.open.edu/openlearn/

FutureLearn is a website which provides free courses to study, similar to The Open University's OpenLearn. Modules can last between 2 - 8 weeks in length and can be used as a preparatory step before undertaking OU study. Most modules allow students to obtain a 'Statement of Participation' or 'Certificate of Achievement':

www.futurelearn.com

Finally, there is the Khan Academy which provides free study in specialist subjects. These topics can range from Computer programming to World History to Algebra and is a useful resource for students to look at before undertaking modules.

Hello Nicole,

OU undergraduate students can apply for a TOTUM card, which is an NUS card that offers discounts on a wide variety of products, unfortunately they are not available to students on Access modules - they only become available on the first module of a degree, certificate or diploma of higher education:

https://www.oustudents.com/totum

Registration for study in May 2022 is now open, and you can register by calling Student Recruitment on 0300 303 5303. Our current opening hours are 8am-17.30pm, Monday-Friday. The final enrolment date for study in May will be 08/04/2021.

More information on Access modules, and the eligibility criteria for funding, can be found here:

http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/access

We'd also recommend checking your study level before you book a course - the Ready For Success quiz

only takes a minute to complete and suggests where you’ll need to start your studies

http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/ready-for-success

I hope that helps get you started

All the best

Jim

How much does Feb 2022 Arts and Language Access Module cost? Also, in seeking to register with OU, there is no option under educational qualifications to say I have passed two Aberdeen Uni access courses (B grade)  albeit 3p years ago. P

Hi Ian,

The fee for the Access module depends on which nation of the UK you live in. The fees are as follows:

England £792
Scotland £264
Wales   £321
Northern Ireland £264

The Access courses you studied at Aberdeen University will be Access to Higher Education courses. They are level 3 qualifications and are equivalent to A-levels and Highers. You should be able to select one of those options as your previous education level when you reserve. If you would like us to help you with this please call Student Recruitment on 0300 303 5303, our phone lines are open Monday-Friday 08:00-17:30.

Hi Ian

That's great to hear. An Access module is an ideal way to prepare for your OU degree. Whilst the module won’t count towards your degree we know that students who start with an Access module are more likely to succeed. It may mean that you study for a little longer, but it’s well worth the investment.

The study materials have been prepared with the needs of new learners in mind, so it’s great if you’re a beginner or returning to study. You’ll use your general knowledge and interests to gradually build up to university-level study. It will develop key study skills such as time management, note taking, reading for study purposes and reflection on your own learning.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Caroline

It's great to hear your son is doing well and that you are feeling ready to return to study. We have years of experience supporting students studying with a disability. You can see examples of how we support students here:

https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/disability

As long as you have broadband internet access and a desktop or laptop computer with an up-to-date version of Windows (10 or 11), or macOS (10.15 or higher) this will be fine for study. We do have an OU Study mobile app which operates on all current, supported versions of Android and iOS but this isn’t essential for study.

You can see our courses in Law and in Business below:

https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/business-management/degrees

https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/law

The fees and funding options available to you will depend upon your circumstances and where you live. Our Student Recruitment advisers will be pleased to advise you about this and the disability support available. They can also refer you for advice about the most suitable course to meet your study goals. As you’ve given us your details previously our advisers will be able to locate your record and update any details which may have changed. You can call Student Recruitment on 0300 303 5303 or request a callback at:

https://www.open.ac.uk/request/callback

Our advisers are available Monday to Friday 8am – 5.30pm.

We hope this helps.

Hi there,

Thank you for your response. I’ve actually secured a scholarship through UniversityLiving.com and wanted to know if it's considered a good platform for students seeking financial aid and accommodation abroad. From my experience so far, it seems helpful in Schloraship and accommodation in Leicester, but I’d love to hear your thoughts or if there are any alternatives worth exploring.

Looking forward to your insights!
