Professional Jargon - is it really necessary?

Visible to anyone in the world

Jargon appears to have crept into every aspect of language from text speak to blogs and seems to be a defining element among different professions, both elevating some in the loop to the exclusion of others. Acronyms and jargon filled sentences fill legal documents as well as newspaper columns and educational journals.

What do you think about Jargon?  Is it necessary?

Would you be enticed into a profession such as the law because of its complex jargon, or be put off and daunted by it?

Are there any alternatives?

I am absolutely sick of the jargon that is used today. As someone who works in the IT business I am subjected to it daily, particularly when working with U.S. colleagues. They seem to be obsessed by it and I am sure there are a group of people who sit around a table somewhere just dreaming up all of the pure nonsense that gets spewed out. Younger colleagues are very prone to it, they either think it is trendy or think that it will portray them as having a "finger on the pulse" if they use it, especially in the company of managers.

I have used jargon in interviews which I suppose at the time I considered 'technical terms.' However, I was almost put off this module by even the jargon in the opening introduction. Phrases were being bandied about without any definition. I see times when it is needed and times when it is not; when speaking to people 'in the loop' then it is acceptable but when speaking to people who you are educating in something new; forget it!

I really dislike Jargon and for me it is very off putting to want to enter a profession or organisation that uses it heavily. However, it is used a lot in my current job but I didnt realise that until I came. I found it hard to settle in the first few months and the confusing jargon was part of that.
I fnd Jargo very elitist and those who use it often (not always) think it gives them some superiority - however, in reality I don't think it does as often they don't even use it correctly. You watch TV shows like the apprentice which illustrates that some people think just bamboozling you with jargon and buzz words makes you believe they know all this detailed stuff about a subject - in reality it is a screen!
I know like others - throughout my MEd I have felt quite overwhelmed at times because of jargon - and that is from someone engaged in education and who works in education. I dread to think how off putting it is for someone who is just tentatively looking to see if education would be right for them. Many would run a mile!
