I am finding some of the OULS rather rude!!!!

Visible to anyone in the world

I am finding out early that people in the facebook group for W101 this year are rude and sarcastic towards me, and with someone who suffers with depression small things like being sarcastic towards me, makes me wonder if I chose the right course for me! I have spoken to others and they have been getting the same as me so I don't know what to do!!! I don't want to quit this as I have just gotten my head around the fact that I am going to be doing law this year, but what I don't understand and what I don't like is the fact that people want or feel the need to upset me and I frankly don't know how to react to it!

Normally I would bite back, but now that I have been through the wars throughout my life, I have found that I am not as quick with the come backs as I was when I was younger, so I really don't know what to do apart from cry!! One person can say one thing to me and then that's it and I am up till the sun comes up and this is what I am doing now as I cant get to sleep

1. Because I am freaking out that its now official that I am studying law with OU

2. I feel like anything that I say in the group that It maybe taken out of context and I will then get random abuse from others in the group.

I honestly don't know what to do???

What do you think that I should do? I really need some advice please

Thank you for taking the time reading my blog

Hi Leon.  Welcome to the blog.  Facebook can add to the OU experience but it isn't compulsory and there will be properly moderated OU fora which you may prefer.  I'd say if a form of social media has upset you then stop using it.  Loads of students don't use Facebook at all.  Good luck with your studies and I hope you enjoy the experience.

I'm with Wendy on this one. I have never used facebook for studying because I never saw the point and would never stay on an informal site or attend an informal group where I was being singled out. I stick to the official forum which a)are moderated and b)have tutor input as a much better and healthier environment. Some forums (fora?) are more active than others but you should find most if not all of the course students there and they are  'on topic' . I don't find I have 'missed out' on crucial information by not being on facebook nor am I picking up others misconceptions about the course materials. My last course was amazing with a very active tutor group and block forum.

Hope everything improves for you soon and the course delivers.

Quick thought. Many of the people on thus forum only respond to 'everyone logged in' as they don't like being googled. If you edit your blog using the drop down menu under the text box you may get a larger response.

Yep, looks like Facebook is your problem there so ditch it Leon.  Good luck to anybody finding it useful but ditching the group won't hold back your studies.  Plenty of help on here for a wider spectrum, your module forums (yes, I know) will provide necessary interaction in a Moderated environment.

Level 1 module isn't it?  There were people on mine I wouldn't choose to meet, quality of company gets self-selective further on!

Good point to always mind your language though, anything that can be misunderstood will be misunderstood so best to consider other people's feelings - it's nice to be nice.

Hey Leon was just looking to say thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself and for the words of encouragement on the Welcome Forum. As someone who also suffers from Mental Health issues I am pleased to see the support you have received from other students and how quickly you identified the solution to the issue raised in your blog. Can I ask if you are making use of any support structure within the O.U itself.
