My Sporting Hero Me

Visible to anyone in the world
In my back yard I had a batting average of 99 and sent many of the bowlers from my neighbours wall to the boundary for an unprecedented six - sixes, sixty - six times, in sixteen minutes.

After lunch that same day I served another match winning volley against that same wall and by tea - time I had won, yet another 'Wimbledon'.

Up until the twilight me and the boys had a gruelling Olympics ending with a 'three times around the block' mini marathon - which I of course won.

In the throws of the bed clothes I trawled through books which told me how what I did that day could be done in 'real life'.

The big match. The thirty - seventh 'Grand Slam' decider that morning and the thirty - fifth against England. The trees roared the national anthems through the cold November air. Me and the 'twelve' boys who competed in the summer Olympics were Wales. 'John and Nigel' were England. Wales won again, although we lost our half - backs, the Thomas Twins, who had to go to town shopping for new boots.

In the same park the post - lunch fixture was the World Cup soccer final; England v West Germany. Guess who was England this time? All of us who were Wales in the morning of course! Who would be West Germany? A group of older boys who we pestered into playing - all three of them. I forget who won now but I am sure it was us.

A long time later and I wonder, if only Murray became a 'Champ', if Wales reached a Rugby World Cup final and if England did the same at soccer - would the children be back at the park or on the roadside or any of those venues that I enjoyed.

As for The Olympics. The best performance in any of our lifetimes to date. The only children that I see running are those to the school bus or the motor car which will inevitably lead them to organised sport.
