Install Packet Tracer: Linux Mint (Cinnamon)

Visit the CISCO webpage and sign up.

Download the archive Packet Tracer 7.2 for Linux 64 bit.tar.gz
Open the file-manager (Nemo) and double click the archive to open in the archive manager
[Extract] to a new folder say ‘PT72’.
Open PT72 in Nemo, double click the ‘install’ file and select [Run in Terminal]

To read the EULA press Return then repeatedly press Space.
Enter ‘Y’ to accept then ‘enter’ (Return) to install in the default location: /opt/pt
Enter ‘Y’ to get root access followed by your password (password characters do not show as stars under Linux bash : the field remains blank while typing)

Create a symbolic link? ‘Y’ when asked.

Click desktop and open a terminal Alt+Ctrl+T. Enter ‘packettracer’. Accept default location for user files e.g. /home/martin/pt and log-in to CISCO: Packet Tracer opens.

Add to the start Menu:

Close Packet Tracer

Right click on the Menu icon: Configure…
Select [Menu] then [Open the menu editor]
Select desired group say ‘Programming’ in the Applications tree on the left then [New Item]

Name: Packet Tracer 7.2
Command: packettracer
Comment: Networking simulation

Click on the rocket to provide an appropriate icon, navigating to say + Other locations > Computer/opt/pt/art/app.png

[OK]
Lauch Packet Tracer from the start Menu

Delete the installation files directory ‘PT72’ or whatever.
