30 TMA 03

Visible to anyone in the world

I feel as if I have put more time and effort into the third TMA than the rest of the course - Certainly more than my EMA. It's not Creative Writing. It's a critical assessment of another writer or writers, to show how my writing has been influenced.

I don't read other writers. My writing is not influenced by anything modern but it has been shaped by many SF and Fantasy works from the Fifties until round about Harry Potter.

Just for this assignment I have read eight books. I didn't enjoy The First Argentines saga by Jeff Wheeler. It's 13th Century England and France, considerably distorted with some strange magic. His Invisible College saga was much better, less real with more magic.

So I analysed all eight books with lots of carefully cited quotations to illustrate my thinking. Then I had to throw away almost all of the quotations to get within the word limit. And I couldn't honestly claim to have been influenced much by Wheeler. I did describe how much the style for my SF novels has been similar to his. I mix Fantasy with Romance and other themes, I use switching POV, and interleave sections separated in time. I have learned to be careful about describing new characters and settings.

I wanted to include a more general overview of SF/ Fantasy sagas and a comparison with Terry Pratchett. Word count restricted these two to a paragraph about Discworld, with no academic references.

I'm not expecting a good mark but I have submitted my TMA, closer to the deadline than I would have liked.

Meanwhile I am progressing with TMA 04 and my EMA is finished - but it needs polishing. Still virtually no evidence of activity on the course Forums.
