Words in German

Visible to anyone in the world

Words in German are such great fun. It you want some fun find out about the hat of the captain of the Danube river boat, it's worth the effort.

My efforts are concentrating on the next assignment. I am transcribing the assessment audio clip into its three component parts. I would be lost however without the questions themselves, especially w.r.t. the names of towns.

Another word I am having difficulty with is one of those great German words, made up of two parts. I found it via Mr Google when all my usual dictionaries failed me. The word is Sparangebot.

I now know that das Angebot is an offer, this is in all dictionaries. But spar was more tricky. I think it is an adjective but derived from the verb sparen - to save. In The Big Yellow book of German Verbs sparen is listed. Under the listing it includes the Command spar(e)!

So, there it is. Was it worth it? Yes it is.

Hi, I find any words that are spoken in German just melts my heart...its that German accent and well I just love it!  I grew up, actually spent about 27 years of my life growing up and living in Germany.  I am British, my parents were with the Forces and really loved my time in Germany.  If I were to pick a favourite word in the German language its go to be...Liebling because of the way it is said, with passion..for me anyway!  Come to think of it any word for me woud do... smile

I just translated it literally which turned out to be "der Hut der Kapitän des Schiffes Danube Fluss", which I didn't think was much fun, so looking around a bit I found a very long word.

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän

Then it started to get silly

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskajütentüraufschriftsfabrikationsmanagersschusterssoftwareinstallierer... etc

Wow! I can't pronounce it but it did stop me studying my maths for a few minutes.

Danke!
