A new way of seeing

Visible to anyone in the world

One Eye - 5 minute sketch

I've been thinking about the notion of new ways of seeing, which we will be discussing as part of the Design & Creative Thinking course. My left eye is my master eye and as I've got older I'm finding it harder to stop my 'lazy' right eye from turning in slightly, with resulting double-vision. For a number of years now, as a coping strategy I've tended to draw with my right eye closed, which has become a habit. For this intentionally fast and loose 5 minute sketch I decided to close my left eye for once and let my right eye do the looking - literally, a new way of seeing.

It did feel strange as I stared into the bathroom mirror in the small hours, scribbling away, holding off a persistent urge to use the other eye. A bit like drawing with my left hand I suppose (I'm right handed). Good to step out of the comfort zone occasionally. Maybe I'll try a complete switch next time; right eye, left hand.

Beware!! I had the same eye issue and "coped" until driving home one night after a very long tiring day. The strong eye just decided it was too tired to cope any more and I developed double vision ......... on the M25!!

One of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Luckily, completely curable with specs that do the compensating for me.

Just wanted to offer a genuine word of caution .... smile

Wow, sorry for the late response, Barbara, I only today spotted your comment.

Thank you for your sagely advice. Funnily enough, the same thing happened to me about ten years ago, and that was when my lazy eye was first diagnosed. Up until then I'd never had a problem. You'll be relieved to know - as will other road users - that since then I too have worn prism lens glasses and all seems well. It's only when I'm involved in non-critical activities  - especially close work - that I tend not to wear my specs.

Middle-age. It's great.
