Hi Neil

First of all I have to disagree. I don't think you waste your time writing here. I think it's all part of how it needs to be. Your writing helps you analyse what's going on. Well, I won't go on, suffice to say - you know it's important to write.

Regarding the maths book, it made me recall something from my past. My maths teacher was so impressed with my attainments in his maths class, he wanted to enter me for the maths O'Level a year early.

He thought it was great that a pupil of his was doing so well and it seemed to give him greater enthusiasm for teaching (he was at a point in his career where he was feeling disenchanted with the whole thing I think).

Anyway, he delved into the maths cupboard and found some maths books for me to take away and practise with.

Unfortunately, I let him down. I went through a bit of a rebellious stage at school and let everything go. His disappointment was palpable.

I don't know where those books ended up but this story is one of the reasons why I'm studying 'with a passion' with the OU now.

I have a lot to failure to make up for.......
