I've done/am doing 95 points this year, down to 50 points as of April, and have completely lost the will to keep going.  It was too much, and too many different subjects.  I am the most unmotivated I think I have ever been, and am engaged in a daily battle not to give up on the whole thing.  I think a month out, and I'd regret that choice though.  Shame I couldn't just have a month out.  I think the trouble with overlapping courses is that you are not allowed the luxury of the completed course come-down.  After cramming for an ECA or exam I think it's only natural to want to hibernate from study for a period.  I know that I lost interest when I put in all my efforts in to getting everything done for 2/5 courses in April.  Since then I have achieved very, very little in the remaining 3, and am further behind than I have ever been - that in itself is quite a feat of personal inaction.  Good luck with the rest of yours.  I'm sure you'll find inspiration just in time!

Interesting you should say that!

I have been struggling with this very problem myself, in these past few weeks.

I should have registered for my next module by now but I haven't.  Firstly, it was about which direction to go in with the studies and though I managed to sort that out (I think), the next problem is how much studying to do?  I would really, ideally like to study two modules, simply because I think that is the level of studying I think I need to keep me 'awake'. However, I also have 'real life' to contend with and I really can't afford to make any compromises with that. I really like your 'qualification verses the knowledge' line, it certainly helps put things into perspective; though I want the qualifications- I want the knowledge more!

Also, I can't stand the idea of doing a half-hearted, botched job- ha ha!  That means I really cannot afford to do two modules at the same time can I?

Thanks for helping me to decide!

Having just given up on M346 there is a lot on your blog post I concur with. I was just doing M346 to get a qualification and it was just getting in the way. OK I wont get a degree in Maths and Stats anymore but I will still have enough courses in two years time to embark on the MSc. Even though there is a gun pointing to our heads as you say.

Cheers Chris.

My only advice would be to keep going smile. But if you are going to study too many modules, you need to work on your happiness too :D as it might get really hard at times (or find a mentor/tutor/friend to help/support you).

Thanks for all your comments.

I'll be OK with the 80 points, I have a tough month coming up, but them I'm down to 60 points and I'm not too far behind.

I suppose that I wrote this piece as a warning, don't strive for too much at a gulp—better to go slower, have some joy and assimilate the knowledge fully.

There are also the intangibles of OU life to consider—the people, the fora and the sense of growing yourself.

All that said some people are able to go much faster.
