That killed and maimed millions? The start?? Celebrate our britishness?
Presumably that's where the £60m figure came from, £1 each. Probably it won't be done that fairly, "we must attract the best generals...". Actually if we'd managed to foist our generals onto the Germans the whole thing might have been over by christmas.
Even when they're dead the poor soldiers are being used as props for wealthy greed-mongers who think that they're plebs. It's like they died twice. This says it better than I ever could.
The self-centred vileness of politicians should never be underestimated.

I admit I find the whole idea bizarre.
Armistice day? OK, Peace is worth celebrating.
But to commemorate the start of WW1, very bizarre, to the point of being a bit sick!

I just read the article you linked to. I reminds me that one of my grandfathers signed up for WW1 but refused to carry weapons or kill. He went into the blood and guts of the trenches and no-man's land as a stretcher bearer with the Royal Army Medical Corps. I don't remember him ever saying that war should be commemorated - only peace.New comment
I, frankly, could not believe it when a friend told me that 'they' are going to 'celebrate' the Great War.
I said. 'Surely there is some mistake. No one would 'celebrate' such a terrible thing. We might as well 'celebrate' Auschwitz if we are going to 'celebrate' terrible things.'
Turns out she was right. They are going to 'celebrate' the Great War.
It's a f**king disgrace. Says a lot about 'them'.
Remember it by all means, learn from it, but, for heaven's sake, don't celebrate it. That's just sick and twisted.

Politicians pah, the last lot were bad enough and their attempts to weasel their way back in by ignoring how much their incompetence helped get us here is laughable, but this bunch.........words fail me.New comment

I agree the whole thing stinks. Of course for the English most people think that the 'Great War' ended in 1918 but most scottish troops didn't stop fighting until 1919 as there were attempts to intervene in the Russian Revolution. Samuel Johnson said that Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel. This government has had the Royal Wedding, the Diamond Jubilee and attempted to Hi Jack the Olympics for their own evil ends.
