The start of the course

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Deborah Judah, Thursday, 2 Sep 2010, 16:16

My excitment has soon turned to trepidation as I access my course materials for the first time.  I have boldly signed up to do the H808 as I have been working as an eLearning advisor for about 2 years and, quite frankly, feel as though I have been blagging it the whole time.

My background is physiotherapy and in latter years physiotherapy education.  I have a MBA and am awaiting results of my PGCHEP; so I am no stranger to studying.  I fell into eLearning as it was the only job I could get when my short term teaching contract ended at University of Bradford.  I had studied an eLearning module on the PGCHEP course and obviously talked a good talk in my interview!!!!

I hope that studying this course will give the confidence I feel I am lacking and also allow me to progress my career in these uncertain times.

My concerns at present are that I am not accessing all the materials I need as the online format is a bit confusing.  I am also a bit worried that I will not engage with the material online as well as paper based.  I know this is a course in distance and online learing but I think I learn best with a book in front of me. I am hoping I can work out a way to download and print some of the matierials.  Another concern is that I will be unable to study if I do not have internet connection as I will be unable to access the material.

I am hoping all these worries will prove unfounded and that I will be able to progress.

Hi Deborah

I know what you mean about engaging online - I find having some paper lets me scribble on it and engage in a way I don't feel with online text.  I have ended up printing a fair bit of the H800 stuff out to read whilst travelling, so hoping this will work for H808 as well.

I'm quite new to this field too - I'm an accountant, but have been involved in training/education for nearly 3 years now.

Like you, I love a bit of paper and have printed things out. Wish I could work more online, because I end up with a cartload of printed stuff and can't bear to throw it away!!

A dilemma shared. In H807 I tried at first to be an online purist and then went the other way and printing everything off and put it in files. I could then read offline, take notes etc: So far, armed with a laptop that works, I am downloading references and course materials so that I can work on the computer, offline, away from the distraction of things like this! And every other distraction the Internet offers, news feed, blogs, BBC iPlayer ... family and cousin on Facebook, the swimming club etc: etc:

One thing I find really works well is to have two computers, now that I have this luxury. I scroll through material on one screen while typing notes into word on the second. Those with the budget can buy an Mac and attach two screens and so have this huge screen on one platform.
