‘Managing’ disability: early experiences of university students with disabilities
Jackie Goode*
University of Nottingham, UK
This article showed the difficulties that students can encounter in their first term of univeristy. Some is due to the ignorance or insensitivity of teaching staff. Often students do not know what to ask for or are reluctant to ask. The stress of settling in at university is made so much harder when a student has to chase up assistance that they need.

Hi Deborah,
I have a mental illness which I declared to the University. They keep asking me what help I require but I have looked at the help on offer and it does not relate to me. I just ignore their emails as I can't see the point. I find that support, and understanding, for physical disability is far more advanced than for mental disability. I suppose this is because I am regarded as not having a 'learning difficulty'. This is true so I suppose it is fair enough. I just don't know what is real sometimes. Sometimes I think mental disabilities are just not understood because a lot of mentally ill people can't fight for themselves. I am lucky to be in the minority who can and for that I am grateful.
all the best,
Matt
