I'm listening to rita [don't click that link] and thinking.

I'm thinking about why we write here, this OU blogs place. Why here when I have everywhere else?

And what is and what is not acceptable behaviour here? Who decides?

There are rules but we all know that unless someone with an 'in' complains you can more or less say what you want here.

But we all know that we can't splurge; post what you like but at some point we will be swooped upon, and asked to explain. Opinions you are allowed, attacks at others, nay.

Unless what you write is so boring that nobody cares that you might be a Nazi.

There should be as little monitoring as possible. There are guidelines - about abuse to each other, or 'flaming' as well as offensive language. Letting off steam to some degree, but what is trickier is where our minds trip us into a stream of consciousness and we put it down. I have once brought a character to the attention of whatever link they have on these pages where there were repeated tirades of F and C words. How free can freedom of speech be? As for this 'bulletin board' it is surely something from a bygone era ... more bulletin board than blog. 'They' don't want commercialization - so posting to flog stuff appears to get 'picked up'. At times close moderation works very well - you should try Linkedin groups for a contrast - a forum rather than blog, so the chronology goes to the discussion. No moderation and it starts to fall apart as too many participants have an agenda to grqb your contacts and flog you some service. Best wishes ... I'm on my first holiday in five years with my son. 24 hours and his need to be in touch with his mates rather than chatting to his Dad and I purchase wifi - 2100m up a mountain. He tells me about Boston. I'd found a book to read. Sometime ignorgance is bliss - it makes me tearful.
