The recent research into the epi genome has been absolutely fascinating. I suggests that we have much more control over our lives and our 'destiny' than we had prevously thought.
As an example: a person walks out into the mid-day sun on a summers afternoon. That same person enjoys the beauty of the day, the amount of light and the viberance of their surroundings.
The point is, in order to be able to 'see' you need contrast: light and Shadow. So while this particular person dreams of the 'light' this same human does not realise the depth of the darkness they are looking into.
I think that this metephore asks questions about our whole understanding of what it means to be human.
Are our dicotimies simply describing our ignorrance. Is nature and nurture just one and the same thing. Before anyone answers, I would advise reading some research on the epi-genome.
