I have been trying with this as well after being inspired by the Wesch video, but I am also having trouble getting it to do what I want - should go back and have another go but it's just another project on the list!
Have you tried Ning.com? It's a useful free SNS - I got my students to create a class page - kept them engaged for a couple of hours but interest seems wanes unless you keep feeding it. There is such a plethora of choices, the hardest thing is keeping them engaged in a task and using English (they are all Arabic speakers). Why would anyone bother SNing in a foreign language?
