I can write 2,000 words. I can write 5,000 words. The OU taught me. This is academic writing. How do I become a journalist though? How do I take the same papers I've read for years and reduce them to a few hundred words without getting my head in a knot?

In exactly the same way you write your current essays. Make an essay plan or define the structure, break it into paragraphs, work out how many words you can allocate to each and write those words. Then practice that a few times. It's just practice.
Your blog posts are very informative but not 2000 words long - what's the difference?

Hello Jonathan,Step away and take some time out.
This sometimes works for me.
Sometimes distance helps to clear the head notts.

The only way I write naturally, and would say I love to write, is straight from my head through my fingertips. Typing since I was 13, but still love a proper fountain pen. My thoughts need to flow. To write then, I need to have put content into my head to allow such flow to happen. This I struggle with when faced with a press release, and a few hours to turn that into something more palatable than the original authors could manage.
