Rembrandt

Visible to anyone in the world

I've been thinking about Rembrandt recently and I came across this painting on Wikipedia. I didn't know about it before.

I think it's simple wonderful and I'm so glad it has survived. I love the way the visual pun of the hand on the picture frame is so low key and the lovely painting of the subject and her hat and clothes.

The painting is in Poland. It's one of a pair the Gestapo seized during the war. Postwar they were restored to the Polish family who owned them, who bequeathed them to the Polish state. They hang in the royal castle at Warsaw.

The other painting of the pair is known as "The Old Scholar at his Writing Desk". This one is called "Girl in a Picture Frame" and possibly also "The Jewish Bride".
