A miniature example of the canal boat 'Castles and Roses' style of decorative art.
This small painting only measures about 200 x 700 mm, but manages to capture a lot of detail.

Have you watched it being done? It is incredibly simple and quick, especially the roses which only take a few brush strokes.
The narrowboat in which we owned a share also had 'scumbling', where metalwork is painted to look like wood. It looks incredibly simple, but is very hard to look convincing. Here is an extreme example that disguises a locker in a steel step.
I can't imagine the patience needed to do this:

That's really interesting! I looked it up and it is a true craft. It uses multiple layers; basecoat, paint, varnish; and special tools; not just brushes but combs, and something called a "flogger", whose job is to flatten the simulated grain a little, so it looks more like real wood. Literally "tricks of the trade".
