Day 146 of OU studies

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Casper Smith, Saturday, 27 Feb 2021, 20:32

One more thing, I dont do social media, although i have heard that the likes that people or companies get can be manipulated to serve a purpose, if so, i was wondering if any one knows whether the same can be done for this blog, i tell you why.

As a kid i was a gypsy boy, i was an odd bod, at school i was the smelly pykey that no one would talk to, the kid that would knock on your door at the weekends to see if you wanted the rubbish left over from you extension moved, as i my Father owned grab lorries and that would be part of our business, if i ever asked a girl out, i would watch her run to her friends and they would vote, she would come back and say "oooh no, your the smelly gypsy who collects our rubbish" as you can imagine, this worked wonders for my self esteem, no need to feel sorry, that ugly duck, didn't half turn in to an handsome fucker, a bit twisted from being bullied but still.

Anyway, the thing is, not lots, but just a little, i still carry a bit of that with me (work in progress), and i wondered whether any one would know whether the1250 people that have looked at my blog, is a genuine number or not, if so, that's pretty remarkable.

In the past i would bang on about, surly no one would be interested in what i say, feel sorry for myself and not recognise it, although nowadays, with the help from psychologists and psychotherapists, i have learned to look at the positives that people say and do, so, nowadays i am able to look at that as a good thing, let it build on my self esteem, and most importantly, not feel bad about it.

Still, with all that said, i do struggle to believe that 1250 in 146 day people have read anything that i bang on about, i lived with me for a while now and i was sure i was full of shit, apparently not, thanks for taking the time out to butchers at what say............Suckers haha, no only joking haha, thanks, who ever you are.

Hi Casper,

As far as I know, the blog count is the number of times there has been a viewing of the blog, but not the number of people who have viewed the blog. So it could be as few as 8 or 9 loyal viewers looking every day. I haven't worked out yet if it counts your own viewing of your own blog.

With blogs open to the world, you may also get automated "bots" viewing from the internet, not just real OU people. Once bots find your blog, you can get thousands of "robot" views. What a "robot" would do with what it finds on your blog, I've no idea. One guy found he was getting tens of thousands of views and he wrote almost nothing in his blog big grin,

Staying open to view by "OU logged in only" avoids risk of bots.

Thank you very much for your response, i dont think you could of explained it any better, the fact that any one is reading my rambles is pretty amazing. I think in todays age where data is no the worlds biggest commodity, nobody is safe or indeed as private as what they would choose to believe, there are thousands of companies out there collecting our information, ready to sell us down the line for a quick buck, never mind silico valley.

Hi

How do you look at someone else's blog ?

Not bad 1250 views in 146 days.

Checked mine - 2358 views since 2016 - shows how interesting (not) my opinions are  big grin

Funny looking back on our childhood, there's a heck of a lot I would like to erase from mine.  Parent's or in my case parent ddn't seem to care how their actions would affect me.  Thoughtless and selfish.

Thank you for your time to respond Judith, i appreciate it.. If you look at the (most comments) section on the right hand side of your own blog, then click on "Matt Hobbs blog", for instance, then it will show you all of their blogs, and if you were to look at my comment above or below yours and click on my name, that will take you to my online appearance, some people choose to keep this bit private.

Maybe people like controversy and have a wired perversion for trauma and upset, i think thats what the tv soaps rely on for greater ratings.

In a certain sense i am similar to you Judith, my parents situation and circumstances meant that my siblings and i were very much affected due to my parents actions, although i believe that, it is that which goes together to make up who i am, although i can be rude at times and i have my insecurities as a result, i like who i am, how i think and what i believe in, and i guess i would not have that had i not suffered in one way or another.

I do not see you as an uninteresting person Judith, moreover, someone who is selective and protective about what you choose to reveal about yourself and there is nothing wrong with that Judith.

Although i do believe that, the part about you, where you said you would like to erase, is the part that truly connects us all, that pain and suffering makes us real, we are promoted to be smiling and happy all the time, take what your given, be grateful and do not express anything other that happiness, and i believe it is that, that secretly connects us, as we have all suffered or suffering in one way or another, i dont think any living person can dodge that bullet.

I believe that sometimes people can respect the honesty and willing to show vulnerability and weakness as opposed to the false reality of 24/7 happiness and stiff upper lip, which for some bizarre reason, is forced upon us.

Hi Casper, smile

I echo what Jan said. If you post as 'visible to anyone in the world' you will get a lot of views. Quite a few will be bots.

My blog posts have always been O.U. 'logged into the system' only. That's why, after 11 years, I have only clocked about 52,000 views. Others who have been here for less time, and post far less regularly than me, but are 'visible to anyone in the world', may have over a million 'views'.

There is a bot issue. As Jan says, I do not know what these bots are doing with the info they collect on 'visible to the world' posts, but there must some reason they are 'viewing' and collating the... well, whatever the data is that they are collating. Info is money I suppose, in ways I can't even begin to understand...

I like posting for O.U. view only because, not only am I somewhat protected from the Internet in general, I know the views counted are actual students (or tutors or alumni).

Still, each to their own - and there's nothing wrong with having a completely open blog. I have one myself with Wordpress.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt, thanks for your response, its much appreciated, yeah Jan explained it really well, it does make sense that if one is open to the world , they will get more hits, this is very new to me and as you guys have been doing for quite some time, it is nice to get points of view from you all. I have been blogging for 146 days, this is the first time i have ever expressed myself in a written format.

Times have changed now, we had the industrial, age, consumer age and now we have the SMART age where data is the main commodity, and the people who's data it belongs to  have become the commodity  (you and i) this is what companies are fighting over, in the past companies have sold all kinds of commodities, merchandise, services, products to humans, what the change brings about is the selling of the humans and there data to the companies that provide services, products etc etc.

When you have a spare hour or so, i would invite you to watch a documentary called "the social dilemma", it has ex co owners, CEO's, VP's and partners of companies like, twitter, instagram, facebook, google etc, who tell about the psychology behind social media and companies that collect data, although i must warn you, it is a pretty sickening watch, prepare for goose bumps, it genuinely blew my mind.
