Visiting Old English churches

Visible to anyone in the world

I like visiting these lovely old English churches. Even though we have quite a large historic church less about 3 minutes away from my house , I prefer to walk 30 minutes away (also good for keeping fit!)and  to visit the little chapel in the next village. This is because it's doors are always open and it has a friendly atmosphere.

What gives it a special charm?  it is set well back off the main road of the village and is set in peaceful surroundings, overlooking a vista of a large field with rolling hills. Behind the church is a foopath and a woodland area, leading to a small stream with a little footbridge over. Then there are various footpaths to follow across the fields.

The church itself has a lovely green area around it with benches and the cemetery lies to the rear. There are some gargoyles and pinnacles decorating the church. It is a grade 2 listed building and appears in the doomsday book as being built in 1086,  that was the original building,  but since then has been rebuilt with the original greenstone and it has 4 ancient bells housed in the bell tower.

The church door is always open and you can go in anytime to pray. It is small and only as big as a ground floor of a house. It is nice and peaceful inside with a nice atmosphere. You can feel that many people have prayed in here over the years!

I like to visit there as part of a walk, either before or after the walk,  depending which way I am coming from.

There is not a lot of iconography  inside the chapel,  just a simple crucifix in wood which has Jesus on, with his open arms to the world.
Behind the altar on one side, on a panel ( reredos) in beautiful Calligraphy, is the Lords prayer on the other side are the 10 commandments from the Bible.

There is a beautiful organ and a wooden pulpit. There are candles and a place to kneel to pray. Then there are the pews on each side of the aisle with kneelers.

As you enter there is a porch, then after the entrance area there is a font for baptising infants. Next further along,  is a reading area with books and chairs then there's the kitchen area, divided off by a heavy curtain.

What I like the most,  is that the door is always open all day every day until 5pm,  and the peacefulness of the place, being off the main road, but it also has a cosiness about it too. The fact that there are fresh flowers in vases dotted about, and it looks clean and smells polished, like it is well looked after. It makes an attractive church to visit.

I usually stay inside here for about 10 minutes to pray, I then go out to sit on the bench outside,  to admire the lovely view of the fields beyond for about 5-10 minutes.
