Reading Germinal

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Saturday, 2 Jul 2022, 14:55

I am reading 'Germinal' in french by Emile Zola. It is a hard book to read because it is about the crippling poverty and the inhuman working conditions in a coal mine in northern France. The time it takes place in is around 1884-1886 and explains the harsh working conditions and the events surrounding the strikes.
In this country it was a similar story, with the rich mine owners who had a comfortable happy life, whereas the miners had a life of poverty and  misery. It is the working classes who are often exploited by the upper classes, This is a realistic story of a mining community in the 1800s.

Hi Gill

I’m trying to get through George Orwell’s 1984. I’m not keen on his writing skills - though I know nothing about writing skills 😂

It rings true to the way things are playing out in our time.
