Being smart... ?

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Werner Grosse, Monday, 31 Oct 2022, 10:23

As it says in the description to this video:

Dr.Dr. Manfred Spitzer is one of the most renowned German brain researchers and one who repeatedly warns of the consequences of digital media. And very provocative: "Excessive use of the internet leads to digital dementia. Smartphones can make you dependent and short-sighted."

So how can smartphones and the like be used sensibly? How do we best deal with digital innovation? What new insights does brain research provide?

Manfred Spitzer studied medicine, psychology and philosophy and was appointed in 1997 as the youngest professor of psychiatry in Germany at the University Hospital in Ulm. He is head of the psychiatric university clinic and also founded the transfer center for neuroscience and learning.

Ironically, I saw the video on my smartphone ... but I'm allowed to do so according to Dr. Spitzer ... because at my age my brain is already "finished" 😜

PS: the speech is in German, but you can set the legend option to English

stay well & healty 🤗

This is not news, except perhaps that it has a neural explanation, and that explanation involuves a new "finished" concept in neurology. It has been established, in occupational therapy, for at least 30 years, probably longer, that various occupations have associated with them an occupational hazard, including mental illness. In computing it is usually unsocialisation that is the hazard. It is not all doom and gloom, however. This predictability makes it possible to build into the education process, a simple treatment or two that someone can apply when someone else in the workplace is acting oddly. If I understand you rightly, it is time for teenagers to learn to recognize when their friends are unsocialising due to excessive computer use.
