Reading, Resting and Recovering!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday 26 May 2026 at 08:22
It started off as a
Sunny day, but also a cold one, and now I have  some kind a flu of  today. I am sneezing a lot,  feeling a bit weak and poorly. It was around about the same time a few years ago that I had the Covid for the third time! (But hopefully not this time!)

I stayed home, kept warm, with a hot water bottle, yes, a bit old fashioned I know, but a great comfort when you feel cold and I drank some hot lemon juice!
I now have my French Degree, so let's put my knowledge to the test!

I decided to study some books 📚 that I had bought from my recent trip to the city a few weeks ago. They are from the little Oxfam Book shop,  where I had asked the gentleman who worked there, to put me aside some french good quality classics(or any!) These books are all in french with some good variety of Authors and titles. Such as;

Alphonse Daudet "Lettres de mon Moulin"

Flaubert
"L'Education Sentimentale"

Hermann Hesse
"Narcisse et Goldmund"

Lisa Jewell
"Tous Tes Secrets"
(Un roman crime)

Fred Vargas
"Sans Feu Ni Lieu"

William Faulkner
"Sanctuaire"

Émile Zola
"Les Rougon Macquart"

Another Émile Zola
"La Fortune Des Rougon"

So as I am confined indoors, awaiting recovery from a flu/cold. I will try to make a good start on reading some of these French books 📖
I will let you know how I get on soon!

A bientôt !

Some mighty fine books there, Gill. My wife and I began watching the French production of The Count of Monte Christo on BBC last night. Unlike yourself, we relied on the English subtitles.

Thanks Jim, I remember watching that film on TV some years ago and reading the book. I would like to read the book in french too. Hopefully I will get around to doing so. Once I have waded through my latest pile of french books! 📚

The problem with 19th century literarure is there are too many characters. I have up War and Peace for that reason.

I know what you mean. I tried reading one of Tolkien's books. It took me ages to work out all the characters!

I prefer watching the films. Much easier to remember! lol!
