Took the opportunity last week to visit Hull in the sunshine (has to happen sometimes 😆), the Minster has some tangible evidence of WWI. The bombing of the city in WWII understandably overshadows the fact that it had also suffered in the previous conflict. There were eight Zeppelin air raids during the war - including one in June 1916 which set light to buildings beside the Minster.
The fire was sufficiently intense to melt the lead in some of the Minster's stained glass. The pictures below shows a memorial of that night. In the 1930s there was an appeal to the local community for the return of any glass that local people had retained, and this was used to form a new 'mosaic' as part of the replacement window.Â
The raid in 1916 triggered three nights of rioting in the city, targeting the properties and businesses of people with German names.
