That sounds like a good approach to me. If you are toatally immersed in a subject you do begin to feel it. The only drawback for most is having enough time to devote to total immersion.
I agree and the mistake I make is to prefer the immersion, following references, reading everything and joining in every conversation rather than more strategically writing TMAs when they are due
Dare I suggest that you stop following a particular reference/lead once you have enough information to satisfy that particular part of the TMA. Best wishes.
The problem is that I am driven by my curiosity, not the TMA. I suppose the pragmatic thing would be to get it written based on getting through the required reading then leave everything else for me to pursue as a personal indulgence. The danger otherwise is to take me off on a massive tangent.
