Codden Hill

Visible to anyone in the world

Writers retreat workshop, 27/06/18.

A descriptive piece of somewhere I love.

My horse climbs the hill. Up, up, up.

Out of the fragrant moist heat of ferns and foxgloves, cow parsley, hogweed and a multitude more.

Flies irritate us both, desperate to get a taste of sweat they land on his flank causing the muscle to twitch furiously as he tries to remove this pest.

As we reach the top we are wrapped in thousands of acres of sky.

The air so fresh in our faces as it blows in from the beaches to the west, cooling the sweat from our bodies.

The view here is 360 degrees, about 30 miles or more in each direction.

The monument at the pinnacle like a beacon of white granite, seen from almost any place in North Devon.

The view in front of me is picturesque British countryside. Hills and hedges, small glimmering villages and towns, miles of sand dunes at Saunton down. I am lucky to live here.

Fluffy bobbing clouds in a crystal blue sky.

The smell of horse and gorse fill my nostrils as we amble slowly home.
