Let me start by saying I arrived here by accident, standing at the alter completely enchanted by the beauty of classical literature. How can I have lived this long living in a parallel world of patients, latex glove and duty doctors?! Had I only known there was a world of colour and happiness to be uncovered! When my feet eventually landed back on the ground, I wanted to read everything ! However I got as far as Russia and decided to set up home, 'Lolita' and its disgusting sophistication had me inhaling the words like a cigarette after a long day. 'The Idiot' had me wanting to revisit every ex I ever had and offer them a long cuddle and maybe some medication or some therapy.
Its been a fascinating discovery, last year I studied Oscar Wilde and created essays on The Secret Garden before converting to an Aestheticist ! If anyone has any book recommendations for me along those lines then I would love to hear from you.
I recently read and then re read 'City of the Bees' by Frank S. Stuart (1947) and it now lives in my handbag at all times, it is beautiful, a year in the life of a bee and is full to the brim with heady perfumes, colours, and beauty. I learned so much about bees themselves without even knowing it was happening because I was under the influence of his lyrical narrative.
Im currently reading Celine ' Journey to the End of the Night' and its very funny...tragic!!! but funny ! He's quite the witty guy ....such as the french !
I want to approach this Creative Writing module with as much innocent wonder as I have the other modules so far in this rabbit hole degree, and discover the talents and magic of other writers. Ill write my thoughts here and treat it like a diary I suppose. My only issue is I do not care really for modern books, sure there are good stories out there, but I feel this is all they are. Stories. They don't land the same way as the writing styles of the classics, the elegance, the substance , the magic of a classic. So im note sure im going to be a very good critique, and unless I can time machine my own writing into the early 1900s im not even sure Ill like my own writing.
But for the time being here goes......
