Opinion

I noticed a woman carrying a Coop shopping bag today in my village. She was leaning quite significantly to the opposing side so I concluded that she might appreciate some help, and she was delighted to hand her bag over to me. I put it on top of my own purchases from the Coop and off we set. Do you know what? she barely spoke. I had to carry the conversation right from the off. I mean her opening question was. 'Where were you off to?' and my answer, 'Home.' Subject done and dusted. There is nothing left to say. It is a non-starter.

I spoke about studying, squirrels, sports, aircraft, even the weather; and nothing. It was like talking to a marionette. Why are so many people so reluctant to find something interesting and evocative in what they hear and verbally respond. I found the whole journey with her so awkward. Has nothing I have mentioned not triggered anything in your mind? Nothing?

When we got ot her house I read the bootstrap on her T-shirt, something to do with a medical service and managed to get her to say she wasn't a physiotherapist, she had just had some 'physio. That was it! The total amount of information she gave out but she let me know where she lives! What can she be fearing? How private does she think she needs to be? One must not talk about oneself? That went out with the dinosaurs. It is all that people do these days.

I despair. I can never find an open person who I can just listen to. I can never find a confident person, an interesting person who will just talk and interact and respond to other people talking. Is it me? Do I really have to respond to an opening such as, 'Where were you off to then?'? I mean what purpose is there behind knowing where I was going? She wasn't coming and plainly I was no longer going there!

I suppose I should allow people to mutter meaningless crud at me and 'moo' back at them or 'baa' or something.
