Surprise Surprise

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Louise Mcgowan, Monday 28 September 2026 at 19:59

So the strangest thing is happening, my bedroom appears to be alive. It is a room with four walls the same as everyone else, but its an avid coffee drinker, or at least an avid ' half-drank' coffee drinker. Every time I wake up or leave the room and come back there appears to be another half drank coffee to welcome me with its cold hand. Not only this, but I am surrounded by books, on the bookshelf where they belong, collected like tupawear over the years for their colour, their title, there 'something about them' quality, have all a sudden started leaping off my shelf in the middle of the night and getting comfortable on the pillow next to me? Books that I have no memory of choosing or wanting to read so desperately in the early hours of the morning.

The latest surprise guest in my bed is a book called 'Tom Jones' by Henry Fielding. When I peeled the covers back and revealed her colourful attire and vintage sophistication I was flattered she had found her way to my bed, so I started to go through her pages ( half a cup of coffee in hand ) and instantly hypnotised by its humour and interest, the opening contains commentary by Kenneth Hopkins who I adore, describing this as the most essential read of anyone with an interest in literature, and she has been sitting on that shelf for many years waiting to be noticed!

Past me walked into a charity shop and purchased this for future me, and I cannot thank her enough.

So thats what im reading now and by the size of her, ill be reading her until the end of time !

Ill keep you up to date on how I find her.

Beats on the Streets

Visible to anyone in the world

5am, and the world is asleep. Well all that is except for the man walking alongside his bicycle holding a speaker playing club music and shouting 'woohoo' as he walks the main road outside the apartment. I think of all the possible reasons he could have for being on the street so awake and ready to irritate the world so voluntarily. Perhaps he has woken to the news he has won the lottery and wanted to share it with this particular section of the town, so full of delirium it warranted walking beside his mode of transport? Maybe he has completed some cycle marathon in Europe somewhere and has just arrived in town, past the finished line he brought preparations to play his theme song for getting over the finishing line so successfully, walking the last few metres home with only energy left to congratulate himself to the sounds of techno beats?

Or perhaps he was not there at all and in my broken sleep from sniffles and coughs I have imagined such a character polluting my ears and causing me such irritation it has brought me to the pen. Either way here I am, and by the time it is now, here I will stay as the day has begun.........

Night cap

Visible to anyone in the world

Its approaching my bedtime, between the endless housework and listening to my teenager in the next room talking about how 'lowkey' everything is, its time to get myself into bed.

I wonder what other people read in their beds, do you read your current choice of novel getting through a few chapters before putting it down ? Or perhaps you read a magazine or the tv guide before choosing something on the TV? I used to read poetry before bed, from 'The Language of Flowers', it was like a natural high....I would read a few poems and then pass out, book in hand and be transported to a garden of flowers or id be sitting on a drone looking down at fields of colour and magic.

I think this year I will revisit nostalgia, as a kid I had a favourite night-time story, and it would be read and re read all the time, I think im going to find a section of a book that gives me a sense of calm, comfort and sluggishness and make it my night cap for a while.  Maybe at the end of this module I will collate them all into a night novel.

happy dreams

Celebrating my new husband Mr Classical Literature

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Louise Mcgowan, Wednesday 16 September 2026 at 06:52

Let me start by saying I arrived here by accident, standing at the alter completely enchanted by the beauty of classical literature. How can I have lived this long living in a parallel world of patients, latex glove and duty doctors?! Had I only known there was a world of colour and happiness to be uncovered! When my feet eventually landed back on the ground, I wanted to read everything ! However I got as far as Russia and decided to set up home, 'Lolita' and its disgusting sophistication had me inhaling the words like a cigarette after a long day. 'The Idiot' had me wanting to revisit every ex I ever had and offer them a long cuddle and maybe some medication or some therapy.

Its been a fascinating discovery, last year I studied Oscar Wilde and created essays on The Secret Garden before converting to an Aestheticist ! If anyone has any book recommendations for me along those lines then I would love to hear from you.

I recently read and then re read 'City of the Bees' by Frank S. Stuart (1947) and it now lives in my handbag at all times, it is beautiful, a year in the life of a bee and is full to the brim with heady perfumes, colours, and beauty. I learned so much about bees themselves without even knowing it was happening because I was under the influence of his lyrical narrative.

Im currently reading Celine ' Journey to the End of the Night' and its very funny...tragic!!! but funny ! He's quite the witty guy ....such as the french !

I want to approach this Creative Writing module with as much innocent wonder as I have the other modules so far in this rabbit hole degree, and discover the talents and magic of other writers. Ill write my thoughts here and treat it like a diary I suppose. My only issue is I do not care really for modern books, sure there are good stories out there, but I feel this is all they are. Stories. They don't land the same way as the writing styles of the classics, the elegance, the substance , the magic of a classic. So im note sure im going to be a very good critique, and unless I can time machine my own writing into the early 1900s im not even sure Ill like my own writing.

But for the time being here goes......
