Hadrian's Wall Triptych

A depiction of three parts of Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland showing Walltown Crags, the Sycamore Gap and Winshields Crag.

There’s nothing I enjoy more than settling into a new art project - this is a set of three relief prints set at different spots along Hadrian’s Wall. I was in Northumberland a few weeks ago, visiting family. I am Northumberland born, bred and educated. The A69, Military Road, and Hadrian’s Wall have connected me to Cumbria for decades, ever since our parents divorced and my father moved to Appleby when I was 13. I’ve done a lot of drawing and surveying of ancient trees, and I have several projects to get on with.

This one, the Hadrian’s Wall Triptych, features views of Sycamore Gap (before the felling), Walltown Crags and Winshields Crag. The idea is to weave the remains of the wall, the roll of the hills, and the sweep of the grasses and shifts in the sky into a theme across the three pictures.

This is a mock-up of the finished three: the tracing paper I used to get the pencil drawings from one sheet of paper onto an A3 Lino block as a negative. I like the way the low evening sun gives the tracing paper a 3d effect. When one biro ran out, I had to press hard to transfer the pencil marks onto the block. I’d grab another, so I ended up with black, navy blue and red marks.

Relief Prints using Vinyl or Lino Blocks

Visible to anyone in the world

Maybe I've found something to engage my busy mind. I can have multiple projects on the go, litter the house with sketch pads, cut and uncut blocks, fill 'Really Useful' boxes with materials and feel the satisfaction of completed exercises. When someone asks me to make a print all the better.

Horses and Trees

An ancient tree and a horse (or two or three) is more appealing than an ancient tree and a nude model I have found. I've even had a commission to do a portrait of someone's tree.

The detail of the horses is too hard to create so the actual prints are far larger and each horse is then reduced to fit the drawing. Though I also have an A1 pastel drawing where the horse prints A4 size can be added directly.

Arting About

Visible to anyone in the world

I'm at at again. My late Mum taught me at home and I took an A' Level in Art age 17 before the 'usual' three A' Levels the following year. 

At the School of Communication Arts, London I went from copywriter to art director to possible illustrator in two terms - but did nothing with it.

Twenty years ago my mum was pointing me towards academics she know who taught art about taking an MA in Fine Art. I procrastinated, though I put a book together.

I settled into Life Drawing six years ago and printmaking this January.

Who knows what'll come of it. It keeps me out of trouble I suppose, though it is an expense to indulge: paper, inks, access to a press ...
