I met Abdul last Saturday. In a taxi, in Milton Keynes. He was the driver. He asked me where I was from. When I said Spain, he started to talk to me in near-native Spanish. And kept talking to me in Spanish until we got to our destination.
Abdul is originally from Kenya. He came to the UK about 15 years ago. He has never been to Spain or any other Spanish-speaking country. He has learnt his Spanish studying with the OU. At a distance.
As he said to me, it's only a question of how much effort you put into it. "When I stop in the taxi, I pick up my book and read", he said to me brandishing his OU textbook. "You don't need to be young or live in the country to learn a language; look at David Beckham: he lived in Spain for so many years and he still couldn't string a sentence in Spanish". Indeed.
