Dotted = Plotted. - 12DEC17

Visible to anyone in the world
"Has the snow gone yet ?" I say as I creep out of the furnace I call my room.

It's been an interesting weekend, the whole of Britain goes into lock down whilst the rest of Europe laughs at us, its not like the weather forecast has predicted snow and cold weather for at-least a week, long enough for grit to be put on the roads but oh well, as the rain washes the snow away, I have been able to keep on preparing for my maths module and in my spare time have plotted all my iCMA and TMA dates for both modules onto an A1 calendar on my wall. May seems to be my busiest month with 2 TMA's and 1 iCMA, the rest of the year is 2 assignments a month which should be managed.

Working over Christmas so thats a month of 12 hour shifts, and nope no over time for me or double pay.

Booked a night at Coombe Abbey Garden Restaurant to celebrate Christmas since I wont be able to see the Mrs over the Christmas period. Who said joining the Forces was a good idea?

Looking for a good bag that can protect my laptop, is waterproof and has enough space for some OU books, a notepad and pencil case, in order to allow me to:

a) Take my studies away into a field with me.

b) Keep everything neat and tidy when it's not in use.

Any suggestions ?

4 Hours a night. - 09DEC17

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Alistair Lamont, Saturday, 9 Dec 2017, 01:07

16-18 hours a week is the proposed for a 60 credit year.

I think this is highly manageable at the moment it works out at just over two and a half hours a night in a seven day week. But to be honest once I get started (the hardest part) I don't seem to be able to stop.

Theres something very rewarding about doing something and then getting it right when you practice it, at the moment I'm doing 4 hours after work, which is broken down into 1 hour chunks with a stretch of the legs, something to eat and a little social for 20-30 minutes before carrying on. This seems to be working for me and I wish I had had this approach when I was younger and will be something that I hope to one day encourage any future little Alistair's to do.

Overall a positive night with bright prospects for the future.

So excited ! - 08DEC17

Excited is an understatement, but I'm trying not to get ahead of myself, taking early revision steady and not burn myself out, before my first module has even began.

Maths has never been my strong suit and so in order to not be at a disadvantage I am using the Christmas period and January 2018 to get my head into studying again, and self teaching. I have started using OpenLearn to start preparing for my modules especially MU123. It seems very simple at the moment but I'm hoping that as I start to push into the more difficult subjects, recapping the basics will allow me to have a bit of an advantage heading into the start of February.

Fell out with the girlfriend last night as she was worried I would become too focused on my degree and not have time for her. It is important to note that she is in her final year of her BEng in Mechanical Engineering and so in order to see her I have to plan something every weekend and keep to timings strictly so she has time to study.

The Irony is that i'm more worried about not having enough time to study due to the Forces being such a spontaneous and diverse career. I'm hoping to see how my first year go's with 60 Credits, and If I can increase my second and third years to 120 Credits, so I can finish the degree in 4 years rather than 6.

Patience... I hear you say.

Fresh beginnings ! - 08DEC17

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Alistair Lamont, Saturday, 9 Dec 2017, 00:27

Well, here I am !

Enrolled on a BSc (Honours) Computing & IT degree. But how did I get here, what motivated me to take this step, and what do I think will motivate me throughout what can only be described as a very long time to be studying.

I left school, after attending private school with average A-Levels and a naive view that I could live life without debt. It was this nativity that led me to not go to university. Well that and I didn't have any idea what subject I wanted to study and with all my colleagues choosing subjects and writing personal statements I felt very much like the odd one out. The end of Sixth Form came and still I had no idea what I wanted to do and so after a couple of kitchen porter jobs I decided to follow down my fathers routes and join the military.

Having always wanted a degree, I always kept it close to my career aspirations. Firstly choosing a role in the forces that through career progression offered a foundation degree that I can top up for an honours. However as the years past, I became more frustrated and felt I wasn't achieving my full potential, and so one night browsing for a company that did classroom based learning on CCNA, I decided to have a look at my old school colleagues on Linked-In and job criteria's for networking positions. The majority asked for a degree or equivalent experience and that brought home the reality, I had been in the Army for just over 4 years and I was in no better a position than I was when I left school, in terms of being employable.

Thats when the Open University comes in. I looked at their website and other University websites, making sure that they were accredited and the modules were subjects I was interested in. And of course the all important question of whether your getting your money's worth.

You can take a guess at the decision I made.
