The Kikuyu Tribe of Kenya

Visible to anyone in the world

The Kikuyu tribe of Kenya traces its origins to a creation story involving Gikuyu and Mumbi, who had nine daughters and were guided by their god, Ngai. The Kikuyu traditionally prayed facing Mount Kenya, where Ngai was believed to reside. Their spiritual leaders, called mundo mugo, conducted sacrifices for the community. Today, these beliefs are often intertwined with modern Christian practices, with Ngai adopted as the term for God in Christianity.
