Quoting data in the thesis

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Carlos Montoro, Friday 30 March 2012 at 17:53

* Warning: This post might only be relevant to postgraduate students writing up their thesis *

I was struggling with the way to quote data in the thesis.

Eventually, I liked the way Poehner (2008) presents his data, ie by assigning line numbers to data excerpts.

My problem then was whether line numbers should be consecutive (ie, run on through the different excerpts used) or start the count at number 1 every time I quote data.

I started off with a compromise: if the data comes from the same source (I have several sources, as you may do too) and follows on chronologically, then I use consecutive numbering. If not, I start the count from 1 with the new quote of data.

But this became confusing. I have now decided to have consecutive numbering within any given section of the thesis, regardless of the source or time stamp of the data. It looks neater and it avoids confusion, for the reader and for me.

Perhaps I can get away with this as long as I justify it somewhere in the thesis (where?).

Best wishes to everyone who is writing up.

Elan

Visible to anyone in the world

OK, I've decided to use Elan (a piece of software from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics) to prepare and later analyse my data.

This decision involves a level of risk, as learning to use the tool and actually using it will be time-consuming.

But, as far as I can see at this point, it is exactly what I need: it will allow me to have all the layers of data in one place, visually, on a timeline. This should make analysing data from my study a much more productive endeavour.

I'm just concerned this might slow me down and make me lag behind quite a lot.

Best wishes to all.

video/computer data collection and analysis tools

Visible to anyone in the world

Today I learnt about Elan and Morae.

Elan (OpenSource) looks good for video data analysis as it integrates transcription (of words and actions), translation and annotation. I'm just not sure about the format of exports of all that data.

Morae looks fantastic because it integrates data collection and analysis, and it records logs of everything the computer user does (but the logs are sometimes patchy, unreliable). But the licence is over US$1,000.

I'm just so confused about my data analysis at the moment. I need to sit down, think carefully about what I'm doing, and make some strategic decisions.

PR06 out of the way

Visible to anyone in the world

I just submitted PR 06 (EdD). I feel so relieved.

But I'm very anxious too as I'm not sure about my categories for data analysis. I'm confident about the methodology, the approach to the analysis. I'm just not sure that the categories will help.

Best wishes to all.

Starry snow

Visible to anyone in the world

A gorgeous morning in Helsinki today. Clear sky, bright sun, starry snow. -15°, though.

I'm about to resume work on my data analysis chapter - justifying the use of the theory of expansive learning.

I hope you have a good day!

FIRST DAY AT CRADLE

Visible to anyone in the world

My first day at CRADLE, in Finland, went fine. We had a warm welcome and was shown the space where I can work. They even put my name on the door - how sweet! I'm sharing the office with the centre's coordinator, Auli, who's ever so nice and respectful.

Yesterday I did my first full-load day at CRADLE and I felt that I made good progress. I'm beginning to understand the theory of expansive learning like I had never done before, and reconsidering many things about my own study.

But I must begin to analyse data immediately. Today. That's the first thing I'll do today: write a paragraph explain layers of analysis based on Engeström's idea of layers of contradiction and begin to analyse data right away.

Must go to my Finnish class later on. That's a nice treat for me, as I usually enjoy learning languages.

Best wishes to all.

NEXT

Visible to anyone in the world

Right, it's time to resume work on my EdD having finished collecting data and now that teaching duties have been dealt with (all final grades submitted, at last).

This is what I need to do in the next month or so.

  • Do the preliminary analysis of my data. I'm excited.
  • Write PR06 (due in on 31st Jan 2011).
  • Get ready for my research visit to Finland (Jan-Apr 2011). Super-excited about this (and v. anxious too).

I feel like a new stage of the EdD begins. Equally scary and exciting, as usual.

DATA ANALYSIS DECISION

Visible to anyone in the world

I'm going one to have one data analysis section for my two participants, rather than analysing one participant first and the other one in a separate section. My reasons: this might make the narrative more interesting; it may be less repetitive and tedious for the reader.
