Unit 17 is going well !

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 16 Mar 2022, 10:12

Reading chapter 2 of block3. I am interested in politics and I am interested in creativity and language! This then is proving to be a good module for me and I am enjoying reading and learning about politics of language and Creativity in a globalised world.

Learning outcomes
Study in Unit 17 should allow you to:

Appreciate creativity’s potential to manipulate and transgress in the arena of political discourse

See how existing linguistic and semiotic resources are frequently repurposed for political ends (often using humour to achieve this)

Examine the ways in which technological advances contribute to the wider dissemination of political messages.

Understand how literature’s openness to interpretation makes it a particularly powerful channel for political expression.

 Consider:
similarities and differences between the way Lillis interprets the notion of creativity and the way it was interpreted in Blocks 1 and 2

why particular forms of linguistic and semiotic creativity are used in political discourse

How Crystal’s use of stylistics and Fairclough’s use of critical discourse analysis (CDA) aid your understanding of creativity in political discourse.

Redemption Day - A Song by Sheryl Crow

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 14 Mar 2022, 19:07

Redemption Day
( by Sheryl Crow)

I've wept for those who suffer long
But how I weep for those who've gone
Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong
But keep on killing

It's in the soul to feel such things
But weak to watch without speaking
Oh what mercy sadness brings
If God be willing

There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For redemption day

Fire rages in the streets
And swallows everything it meets
It's just an image often seen
On television
Come leaders, come you men of great
Let us hear you pontificate
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we aren't listening

There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For redemption day

What do you have for us  today?
Throw us a bone but save the plate
On why we waited til so late
Was there no oil to excavate
No riches in trade for the fate
Of every person who died in hate
Throw us a bone, you men of great

There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For redemption day

It's buried in the countryside
It's exploding in the shells at night
It's everywhere a baby cries
Freedom
Freedom
Freedom

This version by Johnny Cash is very good, very haunting!

Masters of War- A war protest Song by Bob Dylan

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 27 Sep 2023, 14:11

Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy........

A morning walk and studying the politics of language and creativity.

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday, 10 May 2022, 18:16

Feeling sad about this war in Ukraine. I am feeling Sorry for the people of Ukraine, who are suffering from this terrible 'attack' on them and their families.

How can this happen? and so close to us in Europe? but surely this war did not come out of nowhere,  what were the events leading up to it?
Is Putin a mad man or does he have some kind of plan?
Or Is it about money, power or resources?

It is probably complex. Anyway I hope it will all be resolved soon.

I am sick of all this death and war!

Well, whatever happens I still have to get on and study!

This Morning

After a quick walk around the field,  nearest to the village limits, I take in some air, while looking about me at the crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils growing beside hedgerows and brooks.

Around here they call them drains or dykes, which doesn't really capture the sight and sounds of these beautiful bubbling brooks! guess I am a bit of a romantic!

All is quiet and peaceful in the meadow. There are sheep in the next field grazing, but I don't venture too far out these days. As someone who has suffered anxiety from a very young age,  I feel well suited to living here in a quiet place.

Once I get back home, I go to put the kettle on and settle down to study in the main lounge, In front of the window, I am just watching the birds fly down from the little wood behind the house.

The birds fly down onto the bird table to nibble the seeds I had put there earlier. Soon there will be plenty of insects for them to catch in the Spring time.

I put some relaxing background music on quietly, which helps me to concentrate, then I get out my book . Book 3 and study chapter 1 (again).  Copy  a long list of useful words into my digital note book.

Rhetoric: the art of persuasion. The use of Rhetorical devices Logos, Pathos And Ethos. Aristotle argued for a right balance between Logos, Pathos and Ethos.

For example an overuse of pathos could lead to overtly propagandist texts, where appeals to the rational are overridden by those to the heart. This maybe one reason why political rhetoric has long been regarded with suspicion!

I think this must be why a lot of people don't trust the politicians.

I Write notes down and download this unit onto ReadEra. I can then  read this unit off line tomorrow.

Politics of language and Creativity

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday, 8 Mar 2022, 21:15

I am exploring book 3 of block 3.

"The politics of language and creativity in a Globalised
World"

Downloaded unit 16 onto my ReadEra so that I can read it off line when I want to.

Interested in politics so hopefully should be an interesting study especially alongside the Creative language skills.

The political dimension of language use is nothing new, but that the manner of and opportunities for expression of political ideas are evolving rapidly in an increasingly globalised and digitised world.

As in Blocks 1 and 2, three approaches to creativity are used throughout the unit to demonstrate how language and creativity in relation to ‘politics’ can be explored: creativity as an everyday phenomenon, creativity as an evaluative notion and creativity as a resource for individual and social transformation.

The three lenses for analysing creativity will continue to be used.
In Block 3 the critical lens will mainly be adopted, although importance is still accorded to the textual and contextual lenses.
Have made a start on reading the book and when I have finished the chapter I will attempt to do some of the activies.

Greetings From My Bench in the woods

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 15 Apr 2022, 00:23

This morning before my studies, I sat in my hideaway in the wood, just near my house and I listened to the birds singing cheerfully. The snowdrops on the ground reminded me that spring is not too far away now!

Walking through Woodland

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Thursday, 23 Nov 2023, 13:38

It is great to get out and go for a walk in the woods!Footpath through the woods

I am interested in the environment and how to protect it. Trees are so important they are like the earths lungs. I like sitting in the woods listening to the birdsong. The air is fresher in there too!

Visiting a wood,  is a great way to relax, it is a good way to stay calm in between studying!
