Life has to go on whatever happens!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Saturday, 30 Apr 2022, 23:35

Getting down to study again after the death of my sister from cancer. A chapter in my life has been closed down and I have to move on now. I know life has to go on,  despite this choking lump in my throat and stinging in my eyes.

Today finished off reading chapter 3 narratives at work after being temporarily distracted. I should already be well into chapter 4 by now! so lots to catch up on now which about is "life stories" , complex narratives and everyday truths.

Busy organising my own family so missed part of this morning. I think my (2) son and husband spending more time together has been good and freed me up to read a bit more. I watched as they go off for a little walk together just down the lane.

The weather was sunny but windy, as I sat in my lounge in front of the window at the computer desk,  looking out onto the large green lawn with the evergreens at the far end, that  are gently swaying in the wind, full of glistening raindrops from this mornings brief shower.

I write down some important word lists and sentences  connected with chapter 3.
Then I moved onto chapter 4 just making in roads and reading with some note taking.

There is also a very interesting reading, for reading (A ) Looking forward to this, about "life stories" everyone has a life story, so that was good and is very informative! I must read that again. Must get through all this until May to pass my English Degree.

My sister died this week

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 10 Feb 2023, 22:24

I'm still coming to terms with my sister Fran passing away this week,  mid- fifties from cancer. She was a kind, funny, friendly lovely person who worked hard as a care nurse at her local hospital. I shall miss her terribly but she always wanted me to continue with my studies and get a degree. That's what I intend to do. I will continue to study because life is too short, you have to follow your dreams and It's what she would have wanted me to do.

Take care everyone. Life is a gift. Bless you all.

Organising my time wisely

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 25 Sep 2023, 12:56

Finding it is easier for me to study in the mornings,  rather than the afternoons. I have a lot on my mind at present but  find I have a lot more energy in the morning time.(except where there are appointments) I will stick to this but being flexible if necessary.

So having to go through re-registering process again, and proving he was in the at- risk group.

The afternoons are for going out shopping, cleaning, walking and cooking the meal.

Today I studied narratives in the work place. Chapter 3.  These narratives include founding story of the company, company identity, which includes company logo, CVs and interviews. I am in the process of reading this chapter again,  then I will attempt the activities.

I am enjoying this module and finding it stimulating. The reading materials are excellent as well as the online units with audios.

Later I will go for a walk as I have to collect the Organic Vegetables, from the Vege sellers which is about half an hours walk to the edge of village.  That will be my exercise for today!

I will then do the shopping in my local supermarket, then cook family meal. I usually do my cleaning late afternoon, or at night time when it is quiet.

My English Degree finishes in May.  So I hope I can make it!

Poem for my sister - Rest in Peace

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 19 Sep 2022, 16:39

I loved you before you were born
I knew I wanted a sister not a brother

A friend to share my childhood days.
I liked you as soon as I saw you, a helpless little princess
With winning ways.

Yours was a  delicate body,
You were pretty and small with a little snub nose

You were light, like a fairy and happy, always joking around.

Our humour would often bounce off each other and turn into hilarious fun!
You had that effect on me and others

While I was the quiet serious one,
You were the funny  pretty one.

Your long flowing hair and bags of charisma, laughter and fun.

You  made me  smile , Your kindness always showed.

That's how I will always always remember you.

My dear little sister , I will love you for the rest of my days.

A Poem- Finding hope in times of trouble

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 31 Jan 2022, 14:31

Things may not always be like this
The winds of change may blow your way
A turning point may come one clear day
You may feel something move within you,  a greater power at play

Then in that moment inner peace will visit you

And with fresh hope your thoughts renew.

Narrative, language and creativity

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 4 Feb 2022, 03:11

Just reading chapter2 reading section A.  Young peoples narratives.
It was interesting to learn about the arts and dramatherapy group that the teacher held for the children in a local theatre. But these were no ordinary children, they were special,  these particular children were all suffering from the traumas of the war which was raging in Beirut at the time.

It was under very difficult circumstances that these children had to come  together and they were helped and supported by their teacher throughout this very harrowing time.

They were first encouraged to watch movies in the theatre where they were housed for their own safety, with their parents. This was to  build up their confidence and trust between teacher and pupil.

After the movie a workshop was set up, where the children were allowed to express themselves and just to talk together about what was happening to them.

There were physical excercises to do at the begininng of each session to warm up and get rid of any tension, which helped the children to relax.

Together they were able to form a cohesive group that were able to express themselves through music drama and plays,  that they had rehearsed together as a group.

Eventually the children were enabled to stage a play in the theatre,  for their family, friends and their community. They were all invited to come along and to watch the children perform.

This was an amazing achievement amidst the horrors of war. While the bombs were dropping all around them, the sound of the bombs was drowned out by the laughter of the children, as they enjoyed themselves by taking part in the play.

What an inspiring teacher and an incredible real - life drama story this was!

A Wolf Moon

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday, 15 Feb 2022, 19:11

🌚

Last night I went out for a walk,  I had to go out into the village to buy some thing from the late night shop. While walking there,  I noticed the full moon and it was shining very brightly, in the dark night sky, so I snapped it quickly with my mobile phone camera.  Later I looked it up on google,  and it highlighted the fact that at the moment, it was a Wolf moon, which is the first full moon of the year. Popular belief among Native American tribes, was that it was the time of year,  when the Wolves used to howl at the moon, just before February. But I don't think we have any wolves left in this country any more now.

This morning- Before my studies!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 11 Feb 2022, 10:04

The garden was covered in a white frost this morning. At first I thought it had snowed overnight,  but no, it was like a fine white frost with  ice chrystals, resembling icing sugar,  that looked as though it had been scattered about, on the lawn and the trees, glittering like diamonds in the pale winter sunshine.

On the path in the frost, I noticed the fresh dark paw prints of the cats!
I knew they were both about somewhere but where? under the hedges or in the shed? or the summer house? or under next-doors caravan in the drive? or perhaps under the tall evergreen trees in the back garden? or behind the house in the little wood under the rickety old bench?
Suddenly a flock of birds flew up and out from the little wood at the side of the house.

That was a bit of a give away!
I tiptoed as quietly as I could along the little footpath that runs past the front window and along to the end of the house. There I peered through the fence into the little wood, beside the house, and I could just see the smaller striped cat creeping slowly up a tree, tail flicking, ears pricked, he was ready to pounce on a little bird on the lower branch. I tapped with a spoon on his plate

" Come on! Tyger,  dinner time!" he turned his head quickly, looking around him , all bewildered with  his ears twitching. At that moment the little bird flew away and past by him to safety. The cat then came running eagerly towards me, ready to forget his fun and games, and to eat some tasty fresh fishy morsels!

"Now, where is that other cat hiding I wonder? "   🐈⚱

Children's narratives

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Thursday, 10 Feb 2022, 10:44

I am Just finishing to the end of chapter 1 ,  and now starting to make inroads to chapter 2 which is about young people's and children's narratives. Entitled 'From Crib to youtube'  this chapter explores creativity in young people. About how they create short stories and plays. This is very interesting as it reminds me of when I was young and used to make up stories with my younger sister.

I had been very impressed by the book the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe by C S Lewis, and In our bedroom we had this huge walk-in wardrobe, there I used to get into the wardrobe with my sister and pretend that when we opened the door, we had arrived in another land, a fantasy land.

We had a name for it and for all the chatacters who were based on our toys ie teddy, panda, monkey and lamb, as well as some of our dolls. The room was this fantasy land that we explore and meet these unusual characters!

The bed became the boat in which we sailed across to another Island, but that was a bit more sinister place, where there was buried treasure but all kinds of hazards and advenures!. However we always returned back to safety!

This was a way of connecting my thoughts to childrens narratives and short stories,  to make sense of it by comparing how imaginative stories were then,  to how children make stories up today.

These days children are more influenced by characters from computer games,  such as super mario brothers, car driving games, adventure games or others like tomb raider, or the marvel characters or Harry Potter. They also like Manga adventures. So today Characters in childrens stories may be  influenced more by computer games. I have myself observed this behaviour, from watching my own children play and while babysitting for friends.

Using a digital notebook on the mobile.

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Tuesday, 8 Feb 2022, 14:26

I am now reading through the first chapter of book 2. after having finished TMA 02.  This chapter is about narrative and creativity, which is part of E302 English language.

I am following the same procedure as the last time,  of writing down all the key terms into notebook. The rest is about understanding what I am reading about, so first a quick scan to get the gist of what it is about, then
a more detailed study with note taking, of important facts and using bullet points.

I am using a digital notebook for this purpose it is much easier for deleting any errors I might make, while  I am trying out some of the activities.
Finding it ivery nteresting, slow progress, but just plodding on with it little by little.
