A garden bench in a sunny spot

This is how I spent my Saturday afternoon, relaxing in the garden and pottering about putting some new plants in pots. Feeling very tired today for some reason.  Mostly I was just making the most of the good weather.

World Earth Day

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Friday, 22 Apr 2022, 22:01

Today is World Earth Day. In face of all that has happened over the last 3 years Pandemic, Brexit and the War, between Ukraine and Russia. We may feel a little complacent about matters to do with Climate change at the moment. Yet Now may be a good time as any to assess the situation as it is. This may be the opportune time to look at how we are using energy and from where it comes.

Perhaps it is now the time to move away from our dependency on fossil fuels of gas, petrol and oil and to think about the alternatives.

The situation with Russian and Ukraine war
and Russian oil and gas dependency have prompted some countries to move away from fossil fuels all together and to look for more home grown energy sources like green energy.

In countries like Belgium for example where they have delayed the decommissioning of Nuclear Power plants, or France who have said they will now build even more.
However Germany still want to decommision their Nuclear plants. Instead they will have to rely on coal and gas at least in the short term .

What is Climate change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases.
(Oxford English Dictionary.)

What are the effects of Climate change?

• Rising sea levels.

• Shrinking mountain glaciers.

• Ice melting at a faster rate than usual in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic.

• Changes in flower and plant blooming time.

• More Flooding

• Intensive agriculture and soil erosion

• Loss of hedgerows

• Loss of species like insects.

• Deforestation and land slides

• Drought in some places

• Fires in various hot spots

What can be done?

Switch to sustainable transport. Bicycles, walking, electric cars, public transport or to get to work have a car share system.

Power our homes, businesses and Offices with ' green energies' Like solar, wind, wave, tidal and geothermal power.

keep our homes Warm. Homes shouldn’t be damp and draughty. Insulate walls and loft. Double glaze the windows. Use heat pumps and other green energy sources.

Encourage vegan diets by eating more vegetables. Eat less meat.

Restore nature to absorb more carbon. Plant more trees. 'Rewild' parts of our garden.

Protect forests.

Protect the oceans.

Reduce how much we consume.

For example do not keep buying clothes when you don't need to.

Use Charity or Vintage shops.

Shops should do more to help,  by selling reduced-price older stock clothing.

Reduce plastic use.
plastic is made from oil.
It takes many years to degrade! Look for alternatives things that are more biodegradable.

Paper, paper bags, Cardboard boxes. etc..

This are some of the cause and  effect of Global warming can have and what we can do to help.

Just to make things clearer and what the bible says as a warning  "The earth will wear out like a moth eaten garment" (Isaiah ) and  "God will punish those who are ruining the Earth" (Revelation)

Time out- A Country walk about!

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Wednesday, 26 Jul 2023, 07:21

I stuck to my lent fast today! abstaining from all food! It was very hard, but I have a friend who is also on a lent fast, so we could console each other!

The weather was sunny and mild, so my friend and I went for a walk,  around the village and through the park. We took the little footpath off the beaten track through the field, leading to the next village, where it was all quiet, a deserted field, where we met no other walkers.

We called in at the lovely little old chapel, where much earlier on there had been an Easter service/mass for good friday. The door was  always open during the day until 5.30pm so we went inside to pray.

We lit a candle there and said a little prayer, each for our families. We stayed like this for a few minutes in silence. Thinking also about what is happening in the world, the bigger picture of which we are only a very small part.
Leaving the church,  we slowly  strolled back towards our village.

We then ended up walking back through the wood, close to my home, there we sat for a while, chatting, listening  to birdsong and admired and tried to identify all the different flowers growing in the wood.

We also waved to some of the elderly people,  looking out of the window of the residential home for the elderly, as we passed by near the woods. They smiled and waved back to us.

I think in a few weeks there may be many more Bluebells growing in this wood,  so really looking forward to seeing that, as it's always such a spectacular display!

It had been good today,  for me to have a break from housework, and  studying, my friend she also enjoyed her time off work. Yes, it had turned out to have been a very good Friday!

Blue bells and white flowers

This afternoon as the weather was mild, I was able to take a walk. I walked through the park, through the cemetery and on into the wood. Where many new flowers had grown recently since my last visit. There were Bluebells and whitebells, tulips and red Campion as well as a few remaining daffodils!

A Winter Hideaway

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Monday, 14 Aug 2023, 21:17

In my cottage
I feel safe
A cosy winter hideaway
Is my kitchen Snug and warm with Coffee pot, and breakfast tray

In winter time
I stay for hours
Because its far
from winter showers
Wiith wooden table
White painted chair
There's lots of fruit and flowers

To the other rooms
The door is closed
It's In the kitchen
I will remain
And look outside
to see the garden grow
And watch the winter rain or snow

In summer the door
Is open wide

Then it feels like I'm outside

And  part of the garden

The grass is my rug
the trees my wall
There's the fountain and waterfall

The birds fly down
From lofty trees
While at the  kitchen table  I sit and read

birds fly down

To Hop on the garden table
And gather up the seed.

So far, So Good!

I have really enjoyed this course E302 English
Creativity in Lanuage, it has been a fantastic experience.
🙂
First, I learnt about creativity in language block 1, then in block 2 it was creativity in Narrative, then block 3 was about the Politics of language and creativity, how language is used in the political field.

This has been my favourite course in English up to now.
It has been challenging but very interesting. I feel that I have learned a lot this year.

Next term it is French language,  but I feel a bit rusty, so will have to get out my detective/ story/books and watch some French films in time for the October course start date.

Going to buy Organic Vegetables !

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Thursday, 7 Apr 2022, 20:04

I wonder what has happened to the weather?
It was lovely and warm at the beginning of the month, now it is so cold and damp!
I got caught in a downpour going to the supermarket today. It is supposed to be Spring time.  Is this really April showers more like an April deluge !

I had to dry my hair quickly with the hairdryer,  because it is too long to just leave it to dry naturally as it is, I will probably catch another cold on top of the one I have already!

I hope the sun will show up later this afternoon because I have to walk for half an hour to the vegetable sellers on the edge of the village. They have a large plot of land. I need to buy leeks, carrots, tomatoes and celeriac. Going to make a soup with hot baked garlic bread.  I better make the most of it because Friday is going to be the day when I fast for lent!

In the meantime, I will do some more studying in the lounge and wrap a thick duvet around me to keep warm!
Welcome to cold Britannia!

This time of Lent ✝️

Visible to anyone in the world
Edited by Gill Burrell, Thursday, 28 Apr 2022, 02:55

It is the time of Lent and for many Christian followers, this means fasting, starting  on Ash Wednesday,  then every day or every Friday until Easter.
This is to commemorate the time, when Our Lord Jesus was fasting in the desert, where he was tempted by the devil three times. He was able to resist the devil and pray,  he stayed close to God. It is also a time to prepare for, and to celebrate the mystery of Easter, the time when Jesus paid the sacrifice, to blot out the sins of the world, to those who believe.

It is a time of self denial, to repent of sins. when we give up eating for the day, no meat must be eaten during the day,  so it is a good opportunity to practice being vegetarian.
If you are over a certain age or on medications you do not have to fast.

Instead you can choose to deny yourself something like choclate, alcohol, a holiday, a cake, watching TV or using the social media, something that you usually really enjoy doing. The main thing is to deny yourself, so it should feel slightly uncomfortable like a discipline, then you can pray and repent of sins.
It is also a time for acts of charity or kindness, a time for alms giving.

I myself am fasting every Friday before Easter now, some people do more or some people do less(all depending on health, age or lifes circumstances) For some they will just give up meat for the Friday, others do a full fast. If you do a full fast you can eat after sunset and before sunrise. You can drink water but not have any solid food during the day on which you fast.

It is a time to draw nearer to God to depend on him, to pray and read Holy books such as the Bible or other Christian books including poetry that inspires devotion to God. You can pray for certain things like healing or forgiveness or for a good cause.

The main purpose is to come  closer to God as we depend on his help to get us through the day of fasting. To show gratitude, being grateful for what you do have,  like the basics of life like a shelter, a home,  enough food, money, clothes to wear and so on. Being thankful to God.
